The birthplace of the Holy Great Martyr John the New was the famous city of Trebizond, located near the border with Assyria and Armenia. Located on the Black Sea coast, it served at that time as a convenient port and trade center. The main occupation of its inhabitants was navigation, fishing and trade. John was also engaged in trade.
One day he had to sail on a foreign ship whose captain was a fryag, a man of non-Orthodox faith. Seeing John’s virtuous and immaculate life, his prayer, fasting, and mercy towards those in need on the ship or those who were sick, the captain of the ship was indignant. He entered into fierce disputes with John about faith.
John, as a very wise and skilled man in the book business, always defeated the friag in these disputes, and he was very angry with John and in the end planned the following against him. When the ship landed on the shore near the city of Belgrade, the shipowner went to the mayor and said: “Chief! A husband came with me on the ship, who wants to renounce his faith and join yours. The ruler of the city was delighted, ordered John to be brought to him and said: “I heard that you want to convert to our faith. Blaspheme the Christian faith publicly before the assembly. Stand with us and make a sacrifice to our sun god.”
John replied: “You are lying, O chief! I did not say that I wanted to renounce my Christ. This is the intention of the enemy of truth, your father, Satan! I will not bow to the sun, I will not make a sacrifice to the heavenly body created by the Lord, I will not renounce Christ, my savior.”
Then the governor ordered the soldiers to tear off the martyr’s clothes and, placing many sticks in front of him, said: “Either renounce your faith, or I will give you over to the cruelest torment and death.”
John replied: “Beat with rods, burn with fire, drown in water or cut with a sword - I am ready to joyfully accept everything for the sake of love for Christ.
The torturer ordered to beat John, and the soldiers beat him with rods so much that everything around him was stained with blood, they tied him with chains and threw him into prison.
The next morning, the tormentor again urged John to renounce his faith and, without waiting for this, he ordered to torture him again. When the soldiers who were with him were exhausted, the mayor ordered John to be tied to the tail of a fierce horse. One of the soldiers mounted a horse and drove him through the streets, dragging the martyr along the ground. Crowds of Jews threw stones at him, and one of them overtook the martyr and cut off his head with a sword.
Thus Saint John ended his suffering feat. His body lay unburied, and at night a miracle happened: lamps burned brightly over the body, and three luminous men sang sacred chants, and a pillar of fire was visible over the holy relics of the martyr. One Jew thought that it was the Christian priests who came to give Saint John burial.
He wanted to shoot an arrow at one of them, but it stuck to his fingers and the Jew could not shoot the arrow and stayed like that until dawn. In the morning he told the people who came here what he had seen. And then his arms straightened and he freed himself from the bow. Having learned about what happened at night, the mayor was frightened and ordered the Christians to bury the body of the martyr at their church.
After some time, the fryag who betrayed John to torture. repented of his action and decided to steal the body of the saint. He and his comrades came at night to the tomb of the martyr. But at this time Saint John appeared in a dream to the presbyter of the church where he was buried, and said: “Get up and quickly go to the church, for they want to steal me.”
The presbyter immediately got up and went to the burial place, where he found the coffin unearthed and open, and the body of the saint was about to be taken away.
Having called the pious people, he told them about what had happened, and everyone glorified God, who glorifies His Saints. Taking the relics of the holy martyr, they brought them into the church and placed them on the altar near the Holy Throne. They stayed there for more than 70 years.
Various miracles began to be performed from the relics. Rumors of this reached the great governor of Moldova, Alexander. On the advice of Archbishop Joseph, he transferred the relics of the martyr to the capital of the Moldovan state of Sochav.

Prayer to the Great Martyr John the New of Sochava
Saint John the New, who lived in the 14th century. city of Trebizond, was an honest merchant and was known among his compatriots as a pious man, always ready to help the poor and needy. Once arriving in Belgrade on the Bosphorus, he was captured by the local fire-worshipping mayor, tortured and given a terrible execution for professing the Christian faith.
At night, a radiance appeared over the tortured body of the great martyr, and three luminous men began to sing psalms and perform incense. One of the Jewish shooters, who shot an arrow at the figures, was petrified and could move only after he told people in the morning about the miracle that had happened that night. By the will of the saint, his body remained in the city where he suffered martyrdom, and 70 years later it was transported to the cathedral church of Sochava (the capital of the Moldo Wallachian principality). A particle of his relics is located in the Belgorod Dniester Cathedral.

Holy Great Martyr John! Look down from the heavenly palace on those who require your help and do not reject our petitions, but, as our constant benefactor and intercessor, pray to Christ God, that He who loves mankind and is abundantly merciful will save us from every cruel situation: from cowardice, flood, fire, sword, invasions of foreigners and internecine warfare. May he not condemn us sinners for our iniquity, and may we not turn the good things given to us from the All-Bounteous God into evil, but into the glory of His holy name and into the glorification of your strong intercession. May the Lord, through your prayers, give us peace of mind, abstinence from harmful passions and all defilement, and may He strengthen throughout the world His One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, which He has acquired with His honest Blood. Pray diligently, holy martyr, may Christ God bless the power, may He establish in His holy Orthodox Church the living spirit of right faith and piety, so that all its members, clean from superstition and superstition, worship Him in spirit and truth and diligently care about keeping His commandments, May we all live in peace and piety in this present world and achieve blessed eternal life in heaven, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Saint Spyridon, a simple shepherd, lived on the island of Cyprus in the 3rd-4th centuries. For his godly simplicity of life, helping the suffering and showing mercy to his neighbors, the Lord gave him the gift of working miracles, healing and casting out demons. After the death of his wife, Spiridon took the position of bishop in the city of Trimifunt.
In the history of Christianity, a story has been preserved about the miracle of proof of the unity of God in the Holy Trinity, created by the saint while denouncing the heresy of Arius at the First Ecumenical Council: the brick he clutched in his hands in an instant divided into fire, water and clay.
“Behold, there are three elements, and the plinth (brick) is one,” said the saint, “so in Holy Trinity“There are three Persons, but the Divinity is one.”
The incorrupt relics of Saint Spyridon are kept on the island of Corfu; one of the miracle worker’s hands was transferred to Rome.
Temple of St. Spyridon of Trimifuntsky (at the courtyard of St. Nicholas convent) is located in the village. Gorki (Vladimir region). There is a chapel in the name of the saint in St. Petersburg - on Bolshoy Prospect of Vasilievsky Island, the Church of St. Spyridon is located in Oranienbaum. A particle of the saint’s relics is kept in the temple.
Before the icons of St. Spyridon, prayers are offered for gaining material well-being and stability, for help in solving housing issues and repaying debts.

For in your temporal life you delivered your people from all these disasters: you saved your country from the invasion of the Hagarians and from famine, you delivered the king from an incurable illness and brought many sinners to repentance, you gloriously raised the dead, for the holiness of your life the Angels, invisibly in the church you had those singing and serving with you. Sitsa, then, glorify you, His faithful servant, Lord Christ, for you have the gift of understanding all the secret human deeds and convicting those who live unrighteously. You have diligently helped many who live in poverty and lack; you have nourished the poor people abundantly during famine, and you have created many other signs through the power of the living Spirit of God within you. Do not forsake us either, Saint of Christ, remember us, your children, at the Throne of the Almighty and beg the Lord to grant forgiveness of many of our sins, grant us a comfortable and peaceful life, a shameless and peaceful death, and eternal bliss in the future vouchsafes us, so that we may always send glory and thanksgiving to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.
