Sooner or later, but even the most high-quality and modern sofa can lose its former attractiveness. With every year of operation, the upholstery of this furniture becomes thinner, stains and bald spots may appear on it. Restraining the sofa will help to correct the situation, which, if necessary, can be done independently.

Peculiarities

You can pull the upholstery on a sofa of any shape and size, while this work can be done both independently and with the help of specialists in a furniture workshop. In the case of doing the constriction with your own hands, it is worth remembering that such a process has some features that you will definitely have to face in the course of work.

First of all, you will have to take care of the choice and purchase of not only suitable material, but also a sufficient amount of it yourself. So, for a leather sofa, it is better to purchase eco-leather instead of natural leather as an upholstery material, and the material should always be taken with a margin.

It is from the right choice fabric will depend not only on the appearance of the restored furniture, but also on the subsequent period of its operation.

Must be taken into account design features of a specific furniture model. Some sofas have a rather complex shape and when replacing the upholstery, they cannot be completely disassembled, so you have to try to ensure that in such places the fabric completely repeats the shape of the sofa itself. So, pulling the corner sofa, it is necessary Special attention to give the degree of stretching of the fabric precisely at the corners and joints of the connection of parts of the frame of this furniture. Some difficulties may arise with the performance of this work without the proper skills.

The second feature is that if the furniture is too old and not only the fabric of the upholstery has worn out, during the hauling it will be necessary to replace not only the material, but also partially the filler in the furniture, and possibly some parts of the frame.

This should be taken care of in advance.

Thanks to the constriction of sofas at home, you can not only extend the life of the furniture itself, but also visually beneficially change its appearance, and with it the room itself. After all, many people know that the general tone of the style of the interior of the room is still set precisely by the furniture that is located in it. Therefore, the restoration process itself must be approached very seriously. During the work itself, one should not rush and be distracted by foreign objects. It is best to do the planking at a time when no one and nothing can disturb you.

In advance you need to be prepared for the fact that the work itself, and especially the work performed for the first time, will take you quite a lot of time and effort.

By and large, any sofa can be sheathed at home with your own hands, regardless of its size. The main thing is to stock up on all the necessary materials and tools in advance, carefully study the instructions for performing this work and be ready to follow it completely. If such work seems rather time-consuming, then you can practice on a chair or armchair, or even entrust the execution of the pulling of the upholstery to specialists.

Material selection

In any case, regardless of whether the work on pulling the upholstery will be done independently or by specialists, the first thing you will have to face is the choice of the right material. Experienced craftsmen recommend in this case to use the following tips:

  • Necessarily it is necessary to change the soft filling of the sofa and not just its upper fabric. If a synthetic winterizer acts as a filler, then preference should be given to one that has a clean White color, as this is evidence of its high quality. If the filler is foam rubber, then it is necessary to use two sheets of it 2 cm thick at once, and lay a sheet of felt between them.

  • It is better to choose as the material of the upper upholstery dense fabric with a small pattern without large and voluminous prints. This will save on material, because its pieces will not be thrown back due to the mismatch of the pattern. In addition, as practice shows, such sofas get dirty less and retain their appearance better during use.

  • It is better to give preference to fabrics that do not have lint, for example, from leatherette. If there are villi, it is necessary to ensure that they are short and of the same length. Pay attention that the fabric does not have a harsh and strong unpleasant synthetic scent. If there is one, then this indicates a low quality and its unsuitability as a fabric for the restoration of furniture.
  • Better abandon too rough materials and replace them with eco-leather or tapestry, which will give the furniture an exquisite, beautiful and stylish look. The word "rough" means a fabric that is unpleasant to the touch and has an unpresentable appearance. Using such material, you can not update your furniture, but, on the contrary, artificially make it even more old.

  • It is worth remembering that natural cotton materials wrinkle too quickly and when they are used during a drag, they lose their original appearance, so it is best to discard them. Otherwise, after a few months of regular use, the sofa may need restoration again.
  • Jacquard fabric fits perfectly, it is quite dense, durable, has an attractive appearance and at the same time is realized in various color variations. But it is still better to give preference to jacquard in dark tones and without bright color accents on the fabric. It is they who are first of all erased and spoil the entire appearance of the upholstery.

  • Flock and velor have a beautiful appearance and are quite pleasant to the touch, but at the same time they quickly wipe and lose their attractiveness, therefore the use of such fabrics is also highly undesirable.
  • Stuff like chenille, has good wear-resistant performance, is attractive in appearance and is perfectly cleaned of any dirt, therefore it is recommended to use it as a material for pulling sofas.
  • Arpatek may well become a worthy replacement for natural leather or eco-leather, since it has the same characteristics as they, but at the same time has a lower cost.

As the main material for pulling sofas, you should choose a dense fabric, lint-free with a small pattern, or plain materials that have high indicators of wear resistance. It only makes sense to choose such fabrics, because they will allow you to use the updated sofa for a very long time.

I would also like to note that if the sofa has casters or legs, they should also be replaced with new ones while pulling the upholstery. This will freshen up the entire sofa and improve stability.

Preparatory stage

After being selected required material, you can proceed to the first stage of pulling the sofa, which consists in creating a pattern from fabric. This stage should be given special attention, because the result of all the final work will depend on the quality of its implementation. In this case, the pattern can be made in two different ways:

  • Make a pattern based on old upholstery, which was previously dismantled from the sofa. In this case, the removed upholstery is applied to the purchased fabric and contoured. It is imperative to leave a gap of a few centimeters - 5 will be enough. In the future, the resulting pattern is applied to the frame of the furniture and if it matches its contours, then it is cut out.
  • The second option is more time consuming. First, all parts that can be removed are removed from the sofa - armrests, backs and cushions, carefully measured with a tape measure from all sides, and the results obtained are transferred to the fabric, taking into account the addition of 5 cm on each side. Further all parts of the pattern are cut out and applied to suitable places on the sofa... If everything is in order and the parts of the pattern are of the required size, you can proceed with further actions.

When creating a pattern using any of the above methods, experts recommend that you double check the correctness of the measurements taken before cutting the pattern out of the fabric. It is in this situation that the proverb "measure seven times, cut once" is relevant as never before.

Required tools

In order to carry out the stretching of the sofa at home, as well as to complete its preparatory stage - creating a pattern, the following tools may be required:

  • The material of the upholstery itself.
  • Filler material.
  • Scissors.
  • Chalk or a bar of soap.
  • Stapler and staples for him.
  • Safety pins.
  • A sewing machine or just a thread with needles.
  • Extra strong threads.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Pliers.
  • Pliers.
  • Roulette or regular measuring tape.

Depending on the type of sofa, you may also need a glue gun, medium-thick felt, a spring block, a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. The number of tools always directly depends on which model, shape and dimensions of the sofa selected for restoration.

If everything is clear with the material, scissors and chalk, then pliers and a screwdriver, as well as pliers, can be used to unscrew some parts of the sofa while directly pulling the material. Not in all cases it may be necessary to use all of the above tools, but just in case, it is better to prepare everything in advance, rather than then run around the apartment in search of a suitable tool.

How to do it yourself?

Covering a sofa at home is not such a difficult process. If this procedure is performed for the first time, then, of course, some difficulties may arise. In order to avoid them and cover your favorite sofa as simply and quickly as possible, we will tell you step by step how to pull two types of sofas - a regular one and a corner one.

Straight without springs

You should start work by dismantling the individual components of the sofa, such as corners, pouf, backs and pillows:

  • Use a screwdriver or pliers if necessary. The main thing, dismantle very carefully so as not to damage all parts of the sofa. It is best to stack them together sequentially when removed.

  • Further the old upholstery is removed from the sofa body and removed parts. This process is quite laborious and requires utmost care, because the removed material can later be used as a basis for the pattern. It must be spread out on a flat horizontal surface to level it. This will help in the future to take measurements more accurately and correctly create a pattern.
  • After removing the tissue the interior of the sofa is cleaned, dust, debris and packing particles are removed. Now, if necessary, remove the entire packing and replace it with a new one, or simply correct it and give it the correct position.
  • The next stage is creating a pattern. How it can be done correctly was described in detail above, so we will not describe this process again.

  • Now it is necessary cut out details attach directly to the sofa. This work should be done in stages and carefully. The material itself should be stretched as evenly as possible so that the drawing does not squint and, as a result, the sofa looks like a new one. It is best to start the hauling from the back, sides and seat of the sofa.
  • After the upholstery has been replaced with them, you can proceed to directly pulling the frame the sofa itself. The fabric is attached with needles and threads to removable parts and with a stapler to the frame. A standard glue gun can also be used.

  • Now it is necessary reassemble the sofa in the reverse order of its dismantling. In the event that there are pieces of fabric left, they can be used to constrain ottomans or to decorate the backs or armrests of the sofa itself. The decor, of course, should be selected independently, in accordance with the general interior of the room and the style of the furniture itself.

Corner with spring mechanism

The corner sofa itself has a more complex structure, and the existing springs also increase the level of complexity of the upcoming work on replacing the upholstery. Therefore, I would like to say right away that covering a spring sofa will be more time-consuming and troublesome compared to the restoration of a simple model that does not have spring blocks. In any case, the very process of pulling the sofa can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Dismantling the sofa into two parts. Here you need to separate the corner pieces from each other. If done correctly, you should have a free-standing small sofa and a corner chair.
  2. Now you need to remove all the components that you can dismantle yourself.
  3. Next, we remove all the padding from them and also do the same with the material on the frame of the sofa itself.
  4. We remove the filler and take out the spring block itself, which is attached to the bottom of the sofa with twine, which must be carefully cut. If the springs are intact, then we carefully straighten them and install them in place, if not, then we go to the hardware or furniture store and buy new ones.
  5. It is necessary to intertwine all the springs with very strong linen or cotton threads.
  6. We make a pattern from the removed packing, and carefully roll it up and place it on top of the springs, lay out the filler on top, new or previously cleaned of existing dirt.
  7. Now we cut out the resulting patterns and sheathed with new upholstery, first the removable parts of the sofa, then its frame. As in the previous case, you should carefully monitor the uniform tension of the material on the parts of the sofa.
  8. After all parts of the furniture are re-tensioned, you first need to assemble the sofa, that is, connect the sofa itself and the corner chair, and only then install its removable parts.

Almost any model of sofa with spring blocks can be restored in a similar way. The main thing is to carefully follow the instructions and perform all stages of the work without haste.

Speaking about self-tensioning sofas at home, one cannot but say about useful tips experienced specialists in this matter. It is their recommendations that will help you do this work as correctly, safely and quickly as possible, but the most important thing is that the result will please you for a very long time.

First of all, it is worth mentioning again about the choice of the material itself for the waist of sofas, it should be not only dense, but also quite heavy. The fact is that such furniture is used in various situations, and the heavier the fabric, the longer it will serve you. The material is exactly the part that is not worth saving on.

Often, when performing such work, many people prefer to change the upholstery inside the furniture itself. It makes sense to do this if the inner packing is in a satisfactory condition. If it has become completely unusable, and the spring block, if available, also has to be changed, it is better to abandon the restoration of such furniture and purchase a new one. Many competent furniture professionals often say that complete restoration a sofa is often more expensive than buying a new one. Therefore, the sofa can be over-tensioned if its springs or padding are in good condition.

If such work is performed for the first time, you should first practice on smaller furniture. If the sofa is expensive or antique, it is better to give it to specialists for restoration.

Pulling sofas is actually quite a fun and creative endeavor. Many people admit that after restoring their furniture on their own, they began to practice such work on a regular basis. After all, such a constriction of the upholstery allows you to change the appearance of furniture when you want, and with constant practice, restoration takes little time and does not cause any inconvenience.

Not every old and sagging sofa has a place in a landfill. Restoring upholstered furniture can be just as much fun as buying a new one. And maybe even more if you like to do things with your own hands. In this article, Dekorin will tell and show you how to stretch sofas and armchairs with new upholstery, how you can replace the filling of pillows, how to fix springs and hide minor damage. Let your old furniture will be a source of pride!

Restoration of upholstered furniture inside and outside. Step by step examples

Repair and restoration of upholstered furniture can consist of the following stages:

  1. Disassembling an item into its constituent parts. This is usually required for furniture with wooden legs, armrests, or other parts that need repair or replacement.
  2. Sanding wood elements with sandpaper followed by cleaning with a damp cloth. A wet cloth should absorb all small particles, so that the paint (or varnish) will lie evenly and last longer.
  3. Wood painting. Before applying paint with a brush, it is recommended to prime the surface with a primer. We still recommend using spray paint that can be applied easily and evenly, which will greatly simplify your work and save time. Usually 3 layers are more than enough. After the paint has dried, it can be applied protective covering, which will prevent the appearance of chips.
  1. Replacement of interior filling and upholstery. How to rest the springs inside an old sofa or armchair, we will tell you in detail below in this article. As for the upholstered furniture constriction, everything here depends on the characteristics of the product being restored. For example, the seat of a chair in this example was enough to wrap with a new cloth, which was fixed with a stapler. See more examples with step by step photos below!
  2. Assembling a piece of furniture into a single whole.

How do you like this transformation?

Restoration of cushions for sofas and armchairs

Perhaps this item is the simplest and most inexpensive in the process of restoring upholstered furniture. You will need to measure the height, length and width of your pillows and, based on the data obtained, purchase the required amount of foam rubber. Subtract about 5-10mm from each end to get the correct dimensions for the pillow filling. For softness and increased durability, be sure to wrap the foam rubber with batting or padding polyester. This is what the finished content looks like in the photo:

Repair of upholstered spring furniture: the best way

This method of repairing a spring sofa or chair is considered the most reliable of all existing ones, although it is time-consuming. Let's consider its implementation step by step:

  1. Make sure you remove any remaining upholstery, staples, and nails from the frame. In this case, the furniture body was already completely ready for the installation of the seat (cleaned, sanded, washed, painted). The springs were removed and set aside for later use. Before that, the master took several photos so as not to forget how they were located.
  2. Install straps (sling) on the lower part of the seat to secure the springs. The more of these strips you install, the stronger the seat will be. Use a stapler to secure them, leaving a couple of centimeters of cloth on each edge. The tension should be moderate so that the sling sags slightly when pressing on it.
  3. The extra centimeters on each edge should be folded up and also stapled to the frame. Repeat these steps until you have installed all the vertical lines, then work the horizontal lines. Remember to intertwine with the vertical ones, not just go under them.
  4. Reinforce the strength of each strap with three small upholstery studs. This is how the whole process of repairing upholstered furniture looks like in the photo:

5. Now you can go directly to the installation of the springs. You can use the old photo or just distribute them evenly on the support from the lines. The end of each spring should "point" in the same direction as the rest.

6. The springs are attached to the straps either with a special tool or with a thick twine thread and a special button. Each spring must be secured at three points.

7. Drive 2 nails into the end of each vertical and horizontal row of springs.

8. Measure the length of the twine, which will be 2 times the length of the seat plus 40-50 cm. Fold the segment in half and create a loop around the nails, as shown in the photo below. After that, pulling the twine, hammer in the nails with a loop with a hammer to the very end.

9. Now our goal is to weave the springs together to form the seat and connect all the springs into a single whole. Start and finish tying knots from each edge on the second "ring" from the top, then immediately go to the top rings. This will create a domed seat.

10. After tying all the springs together, wrap the twine around the stud and hammer in until it stops. Secure the free end of the thread with a stapler.

11. For the second thread from each fixed loop, repeat steps 9 and 10, but only it should be tied exclusively on the upper rings, without "falling" to the second level from above.

12. Tie all vertical rows in this way, then horizontal rows, and to be sure, you can still walk diagonally. As a result, none of your springs can move apart from the rest. Be guided by step by step photo to fix the springs in the upholstered furniture seat:

Finally, there is still the hauling of the finished seat. In this case, the master simply sewed on the fabric (which could also be done with a stapler), and masked the seams with tape.

Padding or replacement of upholstery of upholstered furniture

Padding upholstered furniture can also be quite difficult, but it's definitely worth it, especially if you don't have any special weekend plans. Next, you will learn how to properly pull up an old sofa or chair with your own hands.

Step 1. Removing old upholstery

  1. It may seem to you that you know this piece of furniture by heart. However, before removing the upholstery, take a photo of it inside, outside, front and back, taking close-ups of particularly difficult areas around the armrests, etc.
  2. Remove the old upholstery carefully, taking care not to damage it or the furniture itself. You may need a staple remover, screwdriver, and other tools to do this. It is recommended to remove the fabric in the following order:
  • From the bottom base (turning the sofa over on the back or upside down);
  • From the outside of the back and armrests;
  • From the inside of the back and armrests;
  • From the seat.

The old upholstery will be used as a template for you. We recommend ironing it with an iron before placing it on a new fabric.

Stage 2. Sewing new upholstery and hauling upholstered furniture

  1. Use your photos and old upholstery as a guide. Start hauling furniture from the bottom base, then tackle the armrests, backrest, and seat in this order.

2. Cut the fabric to the finished template, taking into account the following:

  • Leave an additional 10-15 mm of fabric on the edges that will be sewn with threads;
  • On the edges to be stapled, add about 50mm, which will be used to pull the upholstery over the sofa.

3. Sew the sections of the fabric where necessary, and pull it over the bottom, securing with a stapler around the edges.

5. Behind her is the outer part of the armrests.

Notice how the craftsman did without seams and secured the outer armrests with a hammer.

The photo below shows an alternative restoration of the armrests. The master secured them with a stapler, and then covered the staples with beautiful tape.

  1. Let's go back to our example. After the armrests, it was the turn of the back. The string sewn around the perimeter gives it an interesting and expressive shape.

This technique can also be used to give expressiveness to the armrests, which was done during the restoration of this chair.

  1. The outer part of the backrest is fixed in the same way as the outer upholstery of the armrests. Additionally, the sofa was decorated with buttons and new legs. In the next photo, you can compare the sofa before and after renovation and constriction.

DIY upholstered furniture restoration: tips with photos before and after updated: April 20, 2018 by the author: Margarita Glushko

There are different materials for furniture upholstery, some of which quickly fail. Often, the product itself is suitable for use - it has an intact frame, filler and fittings, but it no longer looks aesthetically pleasing. For such a situation, there is a practical solution - this is to pull the sofa at home with the call of specialists from a furniture company or a private craftsman. Replacement of upholstery gives furniture a new life.

Material for the waist of the sofa

Textile

It is known that all good materials for creating new upholstery for home furniture must have certain properties. The special qualities of the fabrics ensure long-term operation as intended while maintaining the aesthetic appearance. The material must necessarily have high wear resistance so that the upholstered furniture can be used for years and there is no damage left on it. An important property of the fabric is its 100% hydrophobicity. This quality means the repulsion of moisture, which is very useful in everyday life.

The material must be very durable so that it does not burst under the pressure of people sitting on the sofa. This figure reflects the durability of the new upholstery. Ideally, the fabric is smooth and soft to touch, providing the highest comfort for adults and children alike.

For example, these practical materials are in demand today:

  • jacquard;
  • chenille;
  • anti-claw;
  • velours;
  • flock;
  • matting;
  • tapestry;
  • microfiber;
  • leatherette.

Leather

Leather

Today, a very useful service exists and is gaining popularity - a visit to the home of specialists to tighten furniture with genuine leather. If necessary, the craftsmen take the sofa for a while and work in their workshop. Genuine leather is more expensive than woven upholstery. A professional approach involves careful planning of new furniture upholstery - a set of patterns is made and the parts are sewn according to the scheme.

It is important to choose the right thickness of the natural material. Elastic leather behaves best in upholstery. It is not recommended to overtighten the sofa with leather thicker than 3 mm, as it is too rough and difficult to work with. It is easier to sew leather with a thickness of 1.5 mm. The new upholstery is made of dry leather, but if it is wet, it may shrink later.

Eco leather

Today, covering an old sofa with practical and aesthetic eco-leather costs half the price of buying the same new furniture. Eco-leather is cheaper than natural and keeps its shape perfectly. It is not recommended to do this operation on your own, especially since you cannot just buy the material in the store. Better to turn to professionals. Eco-leather is good because it has high wear resistance, lasts up to 10 years. The material is water-repellent, very pleasant to the touch and surprisingly elastic. The new upholstery will be easy to maintain. Moreover, at first glance, eco-leather is completely indistinguishable from natural leather.

When using such a sofa, allergies are excluded, there is no irritation on the most delicate skin. Eco-leather does not attract dust, does not deteriorate under the influence of high and low temperatures. The hauling process is very time consuming and requires a lot of tools and skills.

How much material is required for the restoration?

Only professionals can correctly calculate the consumption of materials. If you took up this business on your own, then you will have to study some of the nuances. First you need to decide what kind of material will be used. Next, you need to make accurate measurements of all the details of the sofa. Details are cut out taking into account seam allowances and fabric folds. It is imperative to measure the longest and widest parts of the backrest, seat, cushions and armrests. Draw the outline of the sofa as a sketched outline. Add all vertical numbers and divide by 100.

It is important to depict the vertical and horizontal details correctly, in the correct position. The resulting number approximately reflects the length of a piece of fabric in meters, which will be required to cut all the details. To determine the required width of a piece of fabric, it is necessary to start from one of the horizontal parts, the one that is widest. When you calculate the width and length, add another 1 meter for every 5 meters, for a comfortable fit.

Approximate fabric consumption:

  • double sofa - up to 9 sq. m;
  • three-seater sofa - up to 12 sq. m;
  • kitchen sofa (corner) - up to 6 sq. m;
  • corner sofa or regular sofa with 2 armchairs - up to 22 sq. m.

Typically, the consumption of fabric increases greatly if it has a complex pattern that must be carefully adjusted when joining parts. It can also take a lot of material if there are no patterns and design is done on site. In the case of very thick armrests, backrests or seats, or complex, non-standard furniture, a lot of fabric is also consumed.

Types of sofa constriction

Corner sofa

Updating a corner sofa presupposes certain specifics, it is more difficult to work with it than with a classic one. If you contact the craftsmen who are engaged in hauling furniture, then the work will begin with the inspection and disassembly of furniture. All details are signed for convenience, since we are dealing with an angular structure. Next, the upholstery and filler are disposed of. New material defined by the user. Then measurements are taken and new parts are cut on the model of the old ones. If you make a mistake at this stage, the upholstery will be uneven, wrinkled.

After cutting, the process of stretching itself takes place, and then the craftsmen assemble the corner sofa, and it looks like new. Although the process is laborious and time-consuming, it is worth it.

Kitchen sofa

It is known that modern budget kitchen corners with a sofa wear out quickly and the upholstery looks unpresentable. Children or pets can spoil it. Such a picture spoils the interior of the kitchen. If the kitchen sofa has become unusable, there is no need to rush to dispose of it. It is worth calling specialists, they will be able to quickly revive the distortions of the furniture and completely replace the upholstery. It can be left-sided or right-sided. It can be overtightened without stitching parts or with sewing.

Craftsmen know how to update kitchen sofas with decor, for example, sewing on buttons, piping and stitching. It is possible to replace synthetic winterizer or foam rubber; instead, similar new insides are laid. Broken frame parts must also be replaced. Genuine leather can serve as a new upholstery.

Sofa-book

Each of us knows well what a sofa-book looks like, many have been using it for a long time. Your favorite piece of furniture can be short term freshen up by replacing the trim with a new one. The waist technology has been proven over the years and requires standard tools. Any furniture master can handle the job, even with little experience. Some even try to pull the sofa on their own, but it is still necessary to have an idea of the process. To update the book, you need screwdrivers, a construction stapler, a hammer, pliers, PVA glue, harsh threads, a drill, a wallpaper knife, scissors, chalk round-nose pliers and a nail puller.

New covers can be made from any fabric the customer chooses. As a rule, fold-out sofas are cheaper than other complex designs. Often, hauling a book at home is combined with the replacement of some outdated parts.

Sofa armrests

It often happens that the sofa looks like new, with the exception of the armrests. Shabby or leaky sides spoil the appearance of furniture. Armrests of upholstered furniture are the most vulnerable place with which people come into contact the most. We put our hands on the sides or sit on them, or this part can ruin the pet because of the need to scratch everything in the absence of a scratching post. The new armrests are covered with natural leather, eco-leather or any dense material that will match the color and texture of the main part of the sofa.

Repairing the armrests is inexpensive as there is no need to dismantle other parts. Very little material is used up, so you can save money. All the workers have to do is detach the armrests, remove the upholstery and cut out exactly the same parts, attach the trim and sidewalls in place.

  • renovation of a very old sofa with replacement of springs - from 9000 rubles.

The prices are indicated for the work, perhaps the departure of the masters will be paid separately.

Restoration by a private master

A private master is the one you need to pull the sofa with high quality without taking it out of your home. The fact is that contacting a special large firm for the repair of furniture is good, but more expensive, since the payment includes the remuneration of the firm and workers for labor. If you are dealing with a self-taught furniture maker who is called a “jack of all trades”, you will not lose. The fact is that usually a private trader has a lot of experience behind him and he has about the same knowledge as qualified craftsmen from a furniture company.

Do not be afraid to contact private craftsmen, as their services will not cost you much. But try to discuss in advance all the nuances of the upcoming work on updating your furniture, and also control the work process.

How to make a do-it-yourself sofa banner?

Given below step-by-step instruction on self-stretching the sofa:

To return the former look to these irreplaceable interior items, the furniture is hauled by hand. What are the advantages of self-finishing? Of course, in significant budget savings, in the acquisition of skills in handling furniture fabric, in the development of accuracy and dedication.

List of acceptable upholstery materials

Getting started, it is important to remember that expensive samples require professional finishing, so in order not to spoil the sofa with inept actions, it is advisable to contact a restorer. It is also not easy to replace the upholstery of quilted surfaces adorned with all kinds of draperies, piping and pleats. A beginner in such a business is better off postponing the idea of reconstruction, and gaining experience can be done with simpler models.

The following materials allow to carry out the hauling of furniture:

  • dense and strong leather substitute;
  • artificial or natural fabric impregnated with a water-repellent compound;
  • foam rubber of special rigidity with the corresponding marking "EL".

The upholstery should be chosen so that it is combined with the overall decoration of the room and the furniture itself.

In some cases, a combination of all kinds of fabrics is allowed. Most often tapestry, flock, nubuck, jacquard, leather are used for upholstery.

Necessary tools for work

A set of the following tools will allow you to work very quickly and smoothly:

How to avoid mistakes when choosing fabric?

Worn-out upholstered furniture requires careful material selection. He will not only transform her appearance, but also become a practical acquisition. It is advisable to buy a special upholstery fabric, devoid of roughness and relief with a high percentage of synthetic fillers. The location on such a sofa is unlikely to please anyone, therefore, when choosing a fabric, it is important to consider the following nuances:

  1. It is better to bypass the matter with a pungent smell. It is also worth giving up dyeing fabrics.
  2. Among the fleecy coatings, it is better to choose those that have the greatest strength and do not crumble.
  3. Dense fabrics skillfully hide all the drawbacks of the constriction, here it is important to correctly join the drawing, precisely following its coincidence.

A soft foam base must be porous and elastic, with small bubbles, such a material must quickly take its initial shape. When purchasing a synthetic winterizer to soften the surface, it is important to pay attention to its quality: the surface must be uniform in thickness, density and structure.

Main points of installation

Independent restoration of sofas and armchairs does not need complex and curly patterns. Avoiding patchwork sewing will allow the acquisition of fabric with a margin.

  • Before starting work, it is advisable to practice on chairs, which will consolidate the skills in handling fabric, will allow you to choose the most convenient tool and master all the steps of a difficult repair.
  • Before removing the old fabric, it is advisable to photograph the main fastening elements, the pivot points connecting the parts. The final assembly takes place in the order in which it was taken apart.

Restoration of upholstered furniture is carried out in the following order:

  1. dismantling of the side parts, backrest, legs and pillows;

  4. fastening of individual parts of the upholstery;
  5. installation of the finished mechanism.

Rules for the reconstruction of sofas and armchairs

All work on hauling outdated structures begins with dismantling: removing the side parts, seat, handles and legs.

  • It is important to be careful not to damage the frame.
  • Rusted elements are first treated with a special liquid, and then carefully removed.
  • You can get rid of old staples by hooking the plywood with a screwdriver and gently lifting it up. After loosening the fasteners, they can be easily removed.
  • Self-tapping screws are unscrewed, but not pulled out of the wood in any way.
  • Well-preserved fasteners are stored in a safe place for future use.
  • The staples for attaching old fabrics are removed with a knife or screwdriver and carefully remove the upholstery fabric. (Later it will come in handy for making patterns).

Attention! Do not leave staples on upholstered furniture when cutting off the fabric. The subsequent fastening of the new material will be completely inconvenient, as a result, the look of the sofa will be completely ruined.

In addition, the rust that has appeared on the fabric will not beautify the new upholstery at all.

Frame restoration

The old softening layer on the furniture must be replaced, because it is impossible to fix the sagging areas. And the added layer is unlikely to correct the situation, in problem areas it is deformed again. The wooden frame requires more careful handling. And all spring and mesh elements are replaced with new ones. If there are straps at the base of the sofa, check that they are intact and flexible. Their good condition allows these parts to be reused.

The connecting parts of the frame are disassembled, cleaned and glued again, and in order to achieve the maximum result, the joints are fixed with clamps. Once the glue is dry, they can be removed. A socket unsuitable for further use is putty or a plug is placed in it, and a new hole is drilled for the screw at a distance of 2 cm.

It is important that irregularities, burrs and notches are carefully sanded. Failure to do so could damage the new upholstery. Independent action to restore the previous appearance of a shabby sofa or armchair require special care and patience.

How do I cut a new fabric?

The fabric chosen for upholstery is washed and ironed, which will prevent the appearance of creases and folds during subsequent use on upholstered furniture. When cutting fabric, it is important to be especially careful, leaving additional allowance for fastening. It is good if the stock is large and in the process of work you do not have to save every millimeter, and the lack of tissue will cause serious difficulties. Similar actions are carried out with the old upholstery: it is also ironed, then the edges are traced with the remains of soap and cut out.

The first step is to fix the softening layer on the plywood using a special glue. The substance is applied in small drops at the corner and central points. The necessary parts are cut out according to ready-made patterns without allowances. As the glue dries, the upholstery fabric is attached with staples or small nails.

Further, the workpiece is turned over and the fabric is stretched, wrinkles and folds are not allowed. The upholstery is again fixed with fasteners, retreating from the corners 5 cm. The fabric is also fixed and the corners are processed.

Installation of the structure

To assemble the upholstered furniture correctly, it is important to study the pictures taken during the dismantling process. Before carrying out the final assembly, the wooden elements of the sofa must be removed, which are sanded, varnished or painted. All work on the upholstery of the sofa, armchairs are carried out in the following sequence.

Restoration process: step by step instructions

We check the frame and base of the sofa, make a replacement in case of breakage

Before restoring the sofa with your own hands, you need to check the condition of the main frame. If there are cracked or sagging bars, it is best to replace them. An array of wood rarely requires repair, but laminated chipboard breaks often. It is not worth repairing, here you need to completely replace the broken part.

We drag the lower base of the sofa, take the old upholstery as a template

The repair of the back, seat and armrests is slightly different, but in general, the restoration scheme for different parts is about the same.

We replace the upholstery on the inside of the armrests, replace the filler and sew a new cover

First of all, you need to carry out dismantling work:

  • remove the side armrests (usually the bolts on them are made from the inside, here you may need a hex wrench or pliers);
  • remove the seats and backs from the fasteners to the lower frame;
  • remove the old upholstery, remove the staples too;
  • carefully dismantle the old filler, check for suitability for reuse;
  • remove the springs, check their condition, if necessary, clean, lubricate, replace in whole or in part;
  • check the condition of the chipboard, replace the sheets if necessary.

We replace the outer part of the armrests and connect both parts together

It is better to put all small parts from parsing into one container so as not to lose.

We fix the upholstery at the base, use a hammer and a stapler if necessary

At the second stage, we replace the old elements. It is best to use both glue and a stapler to hold the parts together. But if necessary, you can get by with handy means. For example, instead of a stapler, use small carnations:

  • at both sides spring block lay a dense fabric, bend the edges inward on each side and sew with a nylon thread;
  • lay the spring frame on a wooden base, fix the springs through the fabric with a stapler. If there is no tool, you can make arcuate staples from steel wire, or from thin nails, hammering the "head" to the side;
  • put in new, or fit old, filler;
  • pull off the entire structure with a fastening cloth, in the manner of upholstery, fix it;
  • put on a new cover, secure with glue and a stapler.

It's the turn of our wondrous back - we are doing the work according to the same principle

The final stage is decoration

We fix the outer part of the sofa, decorate with beautiful legs and decorate with buttons - we get a great new sofa

Do-it-yourself sofa restoration is an interesting activity, as well as decorating it. Here you can simply lay beautiful pillows, or make a carriage tie.

Diy carriage tie for the back of the new Diana

Usually the backs are decorated in this way, leaving the seats solid. The tie elements are simple, you need to prepare buttons, or metal rivets. Cross diagonals can be emphasized with tape. In order for the foam to lie flat, you need to cut out small circles from the filler at the replacement stage - places for future buttons. Then, cover with fabric and sew on the selected elements. You can use a stapler or strong thread to tighten the buttons on the other side.

DIY upholstered furniture repair

If the structure contains elements made of wood, you can glue a figured wooden array in color on the front of the armrests. Then all the pieces of furniture are assembled back. It is important to check all fasteners so that nothing comes off during operation. That's all, the restoration of the old sofa is over!
