Florence... A city in the heart of Italy, inextricably linked with its history andculture, raised in Catholicism... Church of the Nativity of Christ and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Florence is the first Russian Orthodox church in Italy. The idea of ​​its construction was first proposed in the early 70s of the 19th century by the elder sister of Emperor Alexander II, Vel. Princess Maria Nikolaevna, who lived at the Villa Quarto in Florence from 1863 to 1874.

St. Nicholas Church is a historical continuation of the house church of the Demidov princes, founded in 1840 in their villa near Florence in San Donato in Polverosa. A dedication has also been preserved in honor of the heavenly patron Nikolai Nikitich Demidov, the founder of the “Florentine branch” of the family.

Prince Pavel Demidov, who decided to leave the San Donato estate for Pratolino, in 1879 donated all the decorations of his house church to the embassy church, and after his death in 1885, his widow donated a large sum for the construction of the Florentine church, amounting to almost a fifth of all expenses for construction (in memory of this above front door installed a small image of St. Queen Helena, patroness of Princess H.P. Demidova).

Not far from the main bus station of the city rises a five-domed church, well known for its appearance from churches in Russia. The principles of Moscow-Yaroslavl architecture of the 17th century were reflected in the architecture of the temple of Italy not by chance. Baptistery of San Giovanni

The ancient building is one of the main attractions of Florence, decorating the Cathedral Square. There are legends that say that in the 1st century there was a temple dedicated to Mars at this place. Only in the 9th century did the rebuilt building in the shape of a regular octagon turn into a Romanesque basilica. The church received the status of a baptistery (place of baptism) in 1128. For another hundred years it also served as the Cathedral. Until the 9th century, members of the famous Medici families, Dante, hundreds of famous names of the country, and thousands of common people accepted the faith of Catholicism in the baptistery.

So that parishioners could take part in the baptismal ceremony, three pairs of gates were built in the building. Now they are of particular value to the baptistery. For example, the surface of the South Gate is decorated with 28 paintings from scenes from the life of John the Baptist, made by the famous master Pisano. There are 10 historical illustrations on the East Gate Old Testament. They are otherwise called the “Gates of Heaven”. On the Northern Gate there are gilded bas-reliefs of paintings of the New Testament, made in the Gothic style.

The interior decoration of the baptistery is striking in beauty and is of great value. They include a snow-white marble dome, painted by various Italian masters. The majestic image of Jesus, frescoes depicting scenes of the Last Judgment, Holy Scripture, Heavenly Hierarchy. The frescoes decorating the pulpit of the baptistery are considered the most beautiful in Tuscany. Here is also the famous baptismal spring, which has become an important element of the baptismal ritual for 9 centuries.

Church and monastery of San Marco

The complex with this name consists of the Church of San Marco and a convent (now it houses a museum). The church was consecrated in 1443. In 1498, the Dominican priest Savonarola was its rector. You can see the cell where he lived, a portrait. The monastery building was the first in Florence to feature graceful proportions of Renaissance architectural elements.

The paintings of the monastery were created by Beato Angelico. They decorated cells, corridors, and other rooms of the monastery. Many works of Italian masters of the Early Renaissance have become world-class masterpieces and attract the attention of fans. Since 1866 the monastery has been closed. It houses the museum of Beato Angelico, the famous artist of the 15th century.

Many aristocrats (Musins-Pushkins, Buturlins, Kochubeis, Demidovs, etc.) lived in this city for a long time, and writers, artists, composers (Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky) also stayed.

This is the first Russian Orthodox church in Italy. It was consecrated in November 1903. thanks to the efforts of Father Vladimir Levitsky and donations from Russian parishioners, in particular the Demidov family, and Emperor Nicholas II. The iconostasis of the upper church, donated by the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, the holy martyr tsar, is made of white Carrara marble and yellow Verona marble and contains, as additional icons of saints, heavenly patrons of the last Royal family and the monogram of the Sovereign.

The shrine of the temple is the cross-reliquary of Metropolitan Philaret Romanov (later the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'), which became a shrine of the Royal House with the election of the sixteen-year-old boy Mikhail Romanov to the kingdom. The Romanovs prayed before him until 1698, when Peter the Great, wanting to marry Anna Mons, imprisoned his first wife Evdokia, née Lopukhina, in the Suzdal monastery, who took the cross with her. He never returned to the Romanov family, but was passed down from generation to generation in the Lopukhin family. The last Lopukhina from this branch died in Florence in 1922 and since then the reliquary cross has been in the Altar of the temple.

In the 14th century the market was moved to another location. A church was built on the ground floor, which became very rich during the plague epidemic of 1348; the second floor continued to be used as a granary until 1569.

Basilica in Florence. Built at the end of the 13th century by the Servite Order. The church acquired its modern appearance in 1444-1477 thanks to the efforts of Michelozzo and Leon Battista Alberti. Today the interior of the church is decorated in beautiful late Baroque style.

The main shrine of the church is the icon of the Annunciation, hidden in a case. It is opened only during worship, and the icon itself is considered miraculous. According to legend, the monk who worked on it could not depict the face of the Virgin Mary and finish the icon. Exhausted, he fell asleep, and when he woke up, the face was already on the icon. The rumor about this miracle spread throughout Italy, and icon painters began to come here to make a copy. A copy of the icon is in the Church of All Saints, as well as in the Milan Cathedral.

There is one beautiful tradition associated with this icon. Brides bring their wedding bouquets. It is believed that this will bring happiness to the spouses in marriage.

Church of Santa Maria Novella

The Church of Santa Maria Novella was designed and built by the Dominican friars Sisto da Firenze and Ristoro da Campi. Work on the construction of the church was completed in the second half of the 14th century.

Church of All Saints (Chiesa di Ognissanti)

The Baroque facade of the Church of All Saints dominates the square of the same name, located on the right bank of the Arno, 500 meters west of the Duomo.

Construction of the church began in 1251; it formed part of the monastery complex of the monks of the Humilian order.

Over time, the power of the order grew, the monastery and church, thanks to the patronage of noble families living nearby, were enriched with works of art of enormous significance. Around 1310, the main altar of the church was made by the great artist Giotto (now located in the Uffizi Gallery). In the 14th century, a slender bell tower was built near the church.

In the 15th century, Sandro Botticelli (he is buried in the church) and Domenico Ghirlandaio worked in the Church of All Saints. Ghirlandaio painted the fresco “Madonna of Mercy” (1470 – 1472) in the second altar of the right nave. In 1480, Botticelli and Ghirlandaio created frescoes in the apse, now moved to the central part of the nave, at the same time Ghirlandaio created the magnificent “Last Supper” in the refectory of the monastery.

In the 16th century, the power of the Humilian Order began to fade; in 1571, the monastery was transferred to the Order of the Observant Franciscans.

At the beginning of the 17th century, a radical renovation of the church in the Baroque style took place, the results of which determine the current appearance and interior of the church.

Church of Santa Croce Santa Croce

The Church of Santa Croce (Church of the Holy Cross) is another unique architectural and artistic monument located in the very center of the city. This temple of Florence houses the richest works of art. The Gothic Church of Santa Croce is one of the largest in the city and is also the largest Franciscan church in Italy. Church of St. James Zebedee on the Arno (Chiesa di San Jacopo Soprarno)

On the left bank of the Arno, in the area of ​​San Jacopo (about 200 meters upstream from the Ponte Vecchio), there is a church named after the Apostle James Zebedee (in Italian Giacomo il Maggiore, in Florentine San Jacopo).

The church was probably built around the 10th – 11th centuries, in the Romanesque style. The existence of the church in 1078 is documented. In the Middle Ages, the church became famous for the fact that its rector in the mid-13th century organized a regatta (Palio dei Navicelli), along a half-kilometer route from Ponte Vecchio to the dam of St. Rose (Pescaia di Santa Rosa), which still takes place today. In the 14th century, the church was the seat of the Society of St. James, characterized by strict internal discipline.

A Romanesque portico was added in the 16th century, and a bell tower was added to the church in 1660 (architect Gherardo Silvani). At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was rebuilt in three naves. The interior of the church includes frescoes of the vault by Pier Dandini (“Saint James”), frescoes by Niccolò Lapi (“Moses”), frescoes of the dome by Matteo Bonechi (“Madonna”) and Agostino Veracini (“ Saint Francis of Assisi").

Now the church belongs to the Greek community of Florence. Residents of Florence lovingly call this church “the church with an ass in the Arno” (la chiesa col culo in Arno), since the apse of the church overlooks the river and is often flooded during floods.

Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity in Florence

Orthodox church located on the banks of the Mugnone River. The church was built in the Moscow-Yaroslavl style according to the design of the architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky at the end of the 19th century and was solemnly consecrated in 1903. Church of Santa Maria Novella

The Church of Santa Maria Novella, founded by two Dominican monks Sisto da Firenze and Ristoro da Campi, was erected on the site of an ancient Dominican chapel from the 10th century. Construction of the new temple lasted from 1246 to 1279.

The magnificent façade of the church, which has survived to this day, was created as a result of reconstruction in 1456-70. The temple reconstruction project was developed by the famous Italian architect Leon Battista Alberti. This is the second most important work of Alberti in Florence (the first place is occupied by the Palazzo Rucellai), in addition, it is associated with the name of one of richest people city ​​of Giovanni Rucellai. He wanted to make the façade of the Church of Santa Maria Novella entirely from marble at his own expense and entrusted this project to Alberti. It was planned that Alberti would complete the work begun in the 14th century by Gothic masters.

In the church you can see works of art from the 14th-16th centuries, among which there are frescoes with scenes on the theme of repentance.

Church of Orsanmichele

Between the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, approximately at an equal distance from them (about 200 - 300 meters) is located one of the most unusual churches in Florence - the Church of Orsanmichele. In this place, back in the 8th century, there was a convent with vast lands and a small church dedicated to the Holy Archangel Michael and located near the monastery garden. For this, the church received its strange name - “St. Michael at the Garden” - San Michele in Orto, more simply - Orsanmichele.

Among the features of the external appearance of Orsanmichele are openwork refined stone processing, arcades on the first floor (the church was previously a loggia), wonderful Gothic windows decorated with marble, on the lower tier - the already mentioned tabernacles with images of saints and, just above, medallions with the coats of arms of the Florentine Republic and guilds (some of them were made by the famous Luca della Robbia).

The walls, vaults and pilasters are painted with frescoes by Lorenzo di Bicci, Mariotto di Nardo and Franco Sacchetti. The perimeter of the walls and pilasters are also decorated with numerous sculptures of saints.
