Initially, laminate was used to create a strong, beautiful and durable floor, but more recently it began to be used for wall cladding. There are many reasons for this, ranging from the performance characteristics of the material and its superiority over classic wall decoration, to high aesthetics and originality. In this article we will look at the specifics of installing laminate on walls and tell you how to use this material to make your interior unique.

Laminate appeared on the domestic market relatively recently, but immediately established itself as one of best options floor covering. It is easier to care for than carpet; furniture marks do not appear on it, like linoleum; it is stronger and more durable than any parquet.

Some time passed, everyone covered the floors with laminate, and then an idea was born - if laminate successfully replaced the usual coverings on the floor, why not do the same with the walls? A logical assumption grew into an original design solution, and today wall decoration with laminate is the latest trend.

Not so long ago, MDF panels were in fashion, but their cost made even the most wealthy homeowners hesitate. Laminate creates the same effect of respectability and style, but is much cheaper.

Advantages of laminate for walls:

  • environmentally friendly material;
  • durability (service life of at least 10 years);
  • does not accumulate dust, does not absorb odors;
  • savings on interior decoration(you can forget about cosmetic repairs for many years);
  • originality - a variety of colors and textures will allow you to easily create a unique interior;
  • ease of installation - covering a wall with laminate is sometimes easier than gluing wallpaper.

The disadvantages of the material include intolerance to humidity - when wet, the laminate swells and cracks. For this reason, it is not recommended for use in bathrooms and kitchens. Also, laminate does not tolerate temperature changes - in the heat it will swell and burn, and extreme cold will lead to cracks. So if you are planning to install it on a loggia or balcony, this will not be the best solution.

The last drawback is quite controversial - the high cost of the material. Of course, when compared with traditional ways finishing - wallpaper, plaster, paint, wooden paneling. However, if we consider it in comparison with MDF panels, then laying laminate on the wall will not seem so expensive.

Types of laminate for walls

There are several types of laminate depending on the method of fastening, price, thickness, etc. When choosing panels, you should take into account not only the cost of the material, but also pay attention to special attention method of fastening - with some varieties it will be quite difficult for a beginner to cope with the unfamiliarity.

Types of laminate according to mounting method:

When you have decided on the type of fastening and chosen the color of the material you like, all that remains is to figure out the cost. Laminate is one of those rare cases when the price actually corresponds to the quality and vice versa, so you need to save on it very carefully.

For flooring, class 33 or 34 laminate is used, since it has increased abrasion resistance. The walls will not be exposed to such impacts, so you can save money and purchase material of lower classes - from 21 to 31.

You can buy an inexpensive and beautiful laminate for the wall, but you should soberly evaluate all possible factors affecting the material. For example, it is better not to use it for a children's room - a child can paint a beautiful smooth finish, and it will be very difficult to clean it. If there are animals in the house, for example, a cat who likes to periodically mark its territory, it is also better to refuse laminate on the walls or to cover only the upper part of the surface.

What to consider when choosing a laminate:

  1. Intensity of loads - if there are animals in the house that can scratch the wall with their claws, give preference to inexpensive models.
  2. The appearance of the panels must correspond to the general style of the interior and be “supported” by the color or texture of the objects located in the room. You should not choose dark panels for a small room or overly colorful patterns.
  3. If you want to buy adhesive laminate, keep in mind that the wall surface must be perfectly flat, otherwise the panels will not stick to it. For large differences, it is wiser to install sheathing than to spend money on leveling.

Installation specifics

To cover walls with laminate, you will need different tools depending on how the panels are attached. If you are working with adhesive laminate, you can do it yourself, but for other types you will need special tools. One of them is the boss. This is a special tool that is needed to tap the panels. If you hit them with a hammer, there is a high risk of damaging the integrity of the sidewalls and getting crooked gaps between the elements. The boss evenly distributes the impact force and keeps the panel intact.

Also for work you will need a hook to pull up the last elements when installing in the corners.

Spacer wedges are needed to maintain the setback around the perimeter of the room. They are mainly used when laying laminate flooring, but they can also be useful when finishing walls. Since laminate is afraid of moisture, it must be laid at a distance of 15-20 mm from the corners and floor surface. The material is quite heavy, so if you place spacer wedges at the bottom, they will simply slip out, so before laying it, you need to lay a thin strip near the floor, and use the wedges on the sides.

Helpful advice: when laying adhesive laminate, it is better to wrap the bottom rail with plastic film so that it can be easily pulled out after the glue has hardened.

Prepare a hammer, a building level, a square, a tape measure, a simple pencil and a hacksaw (preferably a jigsaw).

Fastening the laminate

In this paragraph we will look at the features of fastening laminated panels, and we will start with, perhaps, the most common and inexpensive type - adhesive. As we have already said, adhesive laminate can only be installed on perfectly smooth and even walls. In modern apartments, not to mention Soviet-built houses, one can only dream of smooth walls. Alternatively, you can cover them with plasterboard or plywood, but for this you will have to make a sheathing, then install slabs (sheets). It is much easier to make a sheathing and immediately attach tongue and groove laminate to it.

It's another matter if you want to insulate the walls from the inside and complete the job with a beautiful finish. Then you can attach the insulation, cover it with lathing, drywall and begin gluing the laminate. Gluing laminate flooring to a wall is the easiest thing to do, and even a teenager can easily handle this job.

If the wall has minor differences of a few millimeters, they can be eliminated by sanding or using plaster. You can check the evenness of the wall with one in a simple way. You will need a strip the length of which corresponds to the height of the wall without the baseboard. Accordingly, the baseboard must be removed before work (the same applies to door and window frames). Place the strip against the wall and move it vertically along the surface, marking all the protrusions and depressions with a simple pencil.

Panel layout

How to fix the laminate on the wall - horizontally, vertically or diagonally? To answer this question, you need to start not so much from the design idea and personal preferences, but from the complexity of installation. In principle, any of these installation methods is feasible; another matter is whether you can fix the panels in in the right position without special skills.

At first glance, the installation of laminated strips seems simple and quick, but not everything is so simple. As you already understand, it is necessary to leave small gaps in the corners, near the floor and under the ceiling - spacer wedges are used for this. The gaps must subsequently be closed with skirting boards, which are attached to the walls with dowels. To install the dowels, you will need to drill a hole in the panel itself and the wall with a drill. Skirting boards should be installed in increments of 170 cm or more, even if you are covering the wall in solid strips. Such additional fastening is simply necessary, since the panels are held together by locks in one direction. If they are not supported by baseboards, the cladding will simply fall off the wall under its own weight or fold like an accordion.

Experts recommend laying the laminate with a “comb” to increase the strength of the cladding - cutting half the number of strips in half and attaching them in a certain way. Let's say you have 10 solid strips of laminate. You cut 5 of them in half, then start laying with a whole strip, attach two halves to it, then whole again and so on. As a result, short paired strips distribute the load on the fasteners more evenly, and an interesting pattern is obtained.

Laying diagonally looks very original, especially if two colors were used. But attaching laminate to the wall with your own hands in this way - without professional skills - is simply unrealistic, so we will consider horizontal installation of the panels.

Installation instructions

You should attach the laminate to the wall starting from the left corner opposite the entrance to the room, continuing clockwise. Then it will be more convenient to join subsequent elements. If you are left-handed, then do everything exactly the opposite - start from the right corner and move counterclockwise.

Finally, we invite you to take a look at how original laminate flooring looks on the walls in the interior. Various colors, textures and installation methods allow you to create unique images and highlight the advantages of the premises.

Contents of the article:

Laminate is essentially fiberboard wrapped in a durable wrapper. The material has a layered structure and protective coating, which is a decorative wear-resistant film. Due to their excellent characteristics and original appearance, laminated boards have found application for wall decoration, although previously they were used only as flooring.

Characteristics and types of laminate

The laminated decorative board consists of four glued layers:

  1. Bottom layer. It is stabilizing and serves to protect the slab from deformation. In addition, it increases the rigidity of the product, and in some models a special backing is glued to the bottom layer for additional sound insulation of the material.
  2. Slab base. This is a load-bearing layer that is made from wood fibers and has a high density. It carries out the main functions of a laminated board. The supporting layer has moisture-resistant impregnation and a special lock designed for fastening products to each other.
  3. Decorative layer of the slab. This is paper with a pattern of some texture: tiles, stone, wood and other materials.
  4. Top layer. This is an acrylic or melamine resin that protects the product from impact loads or abrasion. The class of the material depends on the thickness and strength of this layer. Recently, its coating has also become decorative: in accordance with the design, a texture is applied to the top layer, enhancing the imitation of natural materials.
Classification of laminate is carried out according to EN 13329 - a European standard that involves testing the material according to eighteen of its parameters. The concept of “class” has indicators from 21 to 34, characterizes the permissible load on the slab and demonstrates its density. The wear resistance of the top layer of the product is determined by the AC indicator.

Laminated boards are divided into four main classes:

  • For home use, products of classes 21-23 are used.
  • For the same use, but with increased load or for commercial purposes, but with low load - class 32 (AC3).
  • For commercial use with heavy loads - class 33 (AC5-AC6).
  • For industrial or sports use - class 34, the most durable of all the above.
The last three classes of laminated boards are more representative of floor coverings that require abrasion resistance. Class 21 slabs are quite suitable for finishing walls with laminate.

According to the method of fastening products to each other, laminate is divided into three types:

  1. Adhesive. Its peculiarity is that the connection of the plates to each other and their fastening to the wall is carried out only with the help of glue. Laying the material is simple, but its dismantling is quite complicated, especially if you want to keep the slabs intact.
  2. Sheet pile. It is distinguished by the presence in its design of special locks, which, when installing the slabs, form tongue-and-groove connections between each other. Such panels are attached to the base with clamps or small nails, which are driven into the grooves of the lock.
  3. Click. It has a special fastening that looks like a tongue-and-groove one, but is much more convenient. When installing on a wall, the panels are fastened to each other at an angle of about 20 degrees. In this case, the grooves of the locks are joined, and the entire structure snaps onto them. This coating requires lathing.

Advantages and disadvantages of laminated boards

Not so long ago, MDF panels were very popular when decorating walls. But compared to the price of laminated boards, their cost is much higher, although these materials look equally stylish and respectable.

In addition to its cost, laminated coating has a number of other advantages:

  • Durability is an important factor that is relevant provided that the cladding is properly used and cared for.
  • A rich selection of color shades and textures - it provides ample opportunities for designers to realize their ideas when decorating interiors.
  • The ease of installation of laminate on walls allows you to carry out the entire range of work yourself.
  • Practicality of the material. Laminated panels withstand wet cleaning quite well, do not accumulate a lot of dust, and do not absorb odors.
However, laminated panels have some disadvantages that limit the use of this material:
  1. The slabs are not resistant to excess moisture. When the base gets wet, they may swell and become cracked. Therefore, their use is highly undesirable for cladding the walls of kitchens and bathrooms.
  2. The material does not tolerate temperature changes in the air. In the cold, the cladding can crack, and in the heat, it can burn out or swell. Hence the conclusion: you should not use laminated panels on an open area or balcony.
  3. Another disadvantage of such boards is the presence of melamine resin in the top layer of their coating. Some experts claim that it has negative effects on health. Listening to their opinion, the use of laminated cladding in bedrooms and children's rooms should be limited.

Features of choosing laminate for walls

When purchasing it, many circumstances should be taken into account. The main one is: the laminate chosen for installation on walls must have a formaldehyde emission rating of Super E class. In this case, the environmental safety of the material will be at a sufficient level.
If there are animals in the house that can scratch the walls with their claws, you should not purchase expensive cladding.

When choosing laminated adhesive boards, it is important to know that the walls must be absolutely flat, otherwise the panels will not stay on them. If there is no desire, time or opportunity to level walls that have significant differences, you can make lathing and buy the appropriate material for it.

The color of the walls after installing the panels should match the interior details. For small rooms Light cladding is suitable, but too bright patterns are inappropriate.

The choice of type of laminated boards affects the method of their installation and vice versa. This should be taken into account based on your financial capabilities and availability of time. For example, leveling and covering walls with slabs can be more time-consuming and labor-intensive than the same cladding over lathing.

Preparation for installation of laminated panels on walls

Before fixing the laminate to the wall, you should stock up necessary tools. The composition of the kit may be different, it depends on the method of installation of the laminated boards. But in any case, you will need a pencil, tape measure, hammer, square and electric jigsaw.

With the adhesive method of fastening the boards, special tools are not required. In other installation options, for example, a mallet will not be superfluous. In order for the panels to fit tightly, they will have to be padded with something. A hammer is not suitable for this purpose, since blows with it can damage the slab and cause cracks in it. A rubber mallet gently impacts the material, keeping its surface in its original form.

In addition, you will need a special hook with which you can easily pull up the slabs for installation in the corners. To ensure a gap around the perimeter of the room between the cladding and the floor, it is necessary to acquire spacer wedges.

Laminated panels are sensitive to high humidity, so the gap from the floor and corners of the room to the ends of the slabs should be approximately 2 cm. A wooden strip should be placed on the floor, and wedges should be placed only on the sides of the panel, since it is not lightweight. When using the adhesive installation method, it is advisable to wrap the rail with plastic film. It will protect the slab from gluing to the support.

In preparation for covering walls with laminate, you should calculate the required number of panels. When calculating, you need to multiply the height and length of the wall, and then add 10% to the resulting number, taking into account the adjustment of the material to the required dimensions.

Technology for attaching laminate to walls

There are two fundamentally different ways attaching laminate to walls. The first involves fastening the material with glue or liquid nails. Using this method, you can easily design the color of the cladding and combine its texture. However, the walls need high-quality preparation, after which their surface should be perfectly flat.

The second method is to install the slabs on a sheathing, which is made of wooden slats and fixed to the walls. The advantage of this type of fastening is the possibility of creating a soundproofing layer under the panels. However, many often refuse this installation method, since it involves some reduction in the volume of the room.

The arrangement of laminated panels on the walls can be horizontal, vertical and diagonal. To choose any option, you need to take into account some factors, including interior features, complexity installation work and personal preferences. When installing the slabs, do not forget to leave the necessary gaps, which were mentioned above. They are covered from below with plinths, which provide additional fastening for the panels.

To increase the strength of the cladding, the slabs are often fastened with a “comb”. Its essence is as follows. You need to take a certain number of slabs and cut half of them in half lengthwise. First, a whole strip is attached, then two halves are mounted to it, then the whole strip is installed again, and so on. The process is repeated until all work is completed. This fastening evenly distributes the load on the fasteners in pairs of halves of the slabs and creates an interesting pattern on the walls.

The horizontal arrangement of the slabs is also interesting. It is especially good when using two colors at the same time, which gives the cladding a special beauty.

Attaching the laminated cladding should begin on the left side of the wall, opposite to the entrance, and move to the right during the process. This organization of labor will ensure convenient joining of panels. There is an exception: if the performer is left-handed, you can start work on the other side of the wall.

The step-by-step cladding process looks like this:

  • Surface preparation. The adhesive option for installing slabs involves preliminary cleaning of the walls from the old coating and leveling them with plaster mortar or gypsum putty. Other options require the manufacture of sheathing.
  • To work on the frame you will need wooden slats or a galvanized metal profile. The width of these elements should be 20-40 mm. They are fastened to the wall using dowels and self-tapping screws, the fastening step is no more than 40 cm. Installation of the sheathing elements should be carried out in a perpendicular direction relative to the future placement of the laminated boards. When attaching laminate flooring horizontally to a wall, the profiles or battens of the sheathing must be positioned perpendicular to the floor. Installation control is carried out at the building level.
  • Selecting the starting point for installation. If you plan to completely cover the entire wall or only its upper part, fastening the slabs should start from the ceiling from top to bottom. When planning to cover the lower part of the wall, work begins from below. It is necessary to immediately measure 2 cm gaps from the ceiling to the panels, as well as from each corner to the slabs.
  • Installation of tongue-and-groove slabs with fastening to the sheathing must be done using clamps, which should fix the panel from below and from above. To cover the walls with high-quality laminate, it can be additionally glued.
  • When installing adhesive panels, apply glue to their back side, and then press the material tightly against the wall. You need to hold the stove in this position for about a minute, and then you can continue further work. The fastening of the remaining plates is carried out in the same way.
The most reliable cladding can be obtained by first fixing plywood sheets to the walls and gluing laminated panels on them liquid nails and additionally secure with clamps.

How to attach laminate flooring to walls - watch the video:

Initially, laminate acted as a strong, durable and beautiful floor covering. Recently it has been used for wall decoration. This is not surprising, because it has many characteristics that are necessary for original and high-quality repairs. For a reliable and beautiful wall, you need to know exactly how to attach laminate to the wall. Then the result will please you.

Advantages of laminate for walls

Wall decoration with laminate is gaining enormous popularity due to a number of advantages of this material:

  • The material is completely environmentally friendly and does not have a harmful effect on the body. At the same time, it does not harbor bedbugs, midges and fleas, as in ordinary wood;
  • It lasts a long time - more than 10 years, and with proper installation and care - all 20.
  • Does not absorb odors, is easy to clean, does not accumulate dust (like, for example, textured decorative stone);
  • Easy installation allows you to lay the laminate on the wall yourself, without the help of builders (additional cost savings);
  • A huge selection of colors and textures will allow you to create a unique design for a room or office space.

Disadvantages include intolerance to moisture and sudden changes in temperature. That is, in rooms with high humidity, for example in the bathroom, attaching laminate to the wall is not appropriate. When exposed to frost, the material cracks, so it is also not recommended to decorate the loggia with this material.

Types of laminate for walls

There are several criteria by which laminate for walls is divided into types, depending on thickness, price or method of fastening. When choosing finishing material you need to be guided not only by its appearance and price, but also pay special attention to the method of fastening, so as not to create problems during installation:

  1. Adhesive laminate for walls . This is the most common type of material fastening. Its elements have grooves with which the parts are connected, and they are glued to the wall with liquid nails or silicone. This method of securing the material is very quick and simple. Its disadvantage lies in dismantling. If in a few years you want to renovate or change the design, it will not be easy.
  2. Sheet pile- This is a universal way to fasten boards. This way you can lay the floor, lay laminate on the wall or ceiling. Each element has locks to ensure the tightest possible joints. The laminate boards are fixed with clamps onto the sheathing, which is installed first.
  3. Clicky- This is a modernized version of tongue-and-groove fastening. Laminate for walls is secured to each other with locks. Some glue panels with liquid nails for strength.

Laminate panels are divided into classes. The higher it is, the stronger and more expensive it is. For flooring, for example, you should choose class 34 models; they are resistant to damage and wear. Laminate for walls can be taken from class 21-31, since no one will walk on the walls. This way you can save a little.

Features of material laying

Finishing walls with laminate does not require any special skills. You just need to follow the sequence of actions and be careful so that the material lays smoothly and beautifully. It is important that the walls are perfectly smooth. This can be achieved using screed or drywall, which is attached to the sheathing.

For models that are attached with glue, no additional tools are needed. But in order to secure the laminate to the clamps, you need a boss. This is a tool for tapping panels so that they fit evenly into the groove. If you use a regular hammer, there is a risk of damaging the surface of the panel. To install the outer elements, you will need a hook.

Laminate for walls is laid out from the bottom up and nothing else!

How to attach adhesive laminate to a wall

Before starting work, you need to prepare all available tools:

  • Pencil;
  • Construction level;
  • Boss;
  • A clue;
  • Jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • Square;
  • Roulette;
  • Kleimers;
  • Glue gun.

The day before starting work, it is recommended to print the panels and lay them out in the room. This is necessary so that the material adapts to the temperature and does not deform in the future.

Then you can start attaching the laminate to the wall. First try on the boards, and then start laying from the bottom corner. If you want to lay the material in a checkerboard pattern, then draw marks on the wall with a pencil. This makes it easier and more convenient to lay the panels. Use a level to ensure that the material is laid evenly. If the corners are not very straight, it's not a big deal. The panels can then be filed a little. Thus, the first row is laid out, the second on it, and so on.

The main thing is to work carefully and nail each board with a boss; use a hook in the corners so that all the elements are fastened together. Be careful when measuring and cutting boards. The more accurately and accurately you do this, the more beautiful it will look.

Use a jigsaw to make recesses for outlets or switches.

If you don’t know how to attach laminate flooring to a wall, then here are some tips from professionals for you:

  • Laminate is flooring and crating or nailing it will not be entirely correct. It should lay down smoothly. Nowadays in hardware stores you can find a special frame that is mounted on the wall, and panels are fixed into it;
  • Laminate for walls requires a flat base. If the walls are too crooked, it would be more appropriate to equip a grating and attach material to it;
  • For aesthetics appearance choose the right pattern on the boards;
  • When choosing, take a material that is thinner and lighter. This will ensure that it is securely mounted on the wall.
  • The panels can be attached to the wall using a ladder or in a checkerboard pattern - this is at your discretion;
  • If you want to pre-insulate the walls, then it is better to make a sheathing and attach drywall to it. lay between it and the wall mineral wool, and then proceed to finishing the walls with laminate;
  • If you need to cover a small area, then you can assemble a shield from boards on the floor and then attach it to the wall;
  • Laminate is a fairly heavy material, so for strength it is important to use screws, nails or clamps. The latter are best, since the nails with their heads will spoil the appearance;
  • Be sure to treat all joints with a special gel for laminate.

In conclusion, I would like to note that laying laminate flooring on a wall is original solution which will help brighten up any interior of a home, office, restaurant or other type of premises. This finish looks aesthetically pleasing and does not require special care or installation skills.

It would be reasonable to treat one, maximum two walls with laminate or use it to highlight zones. For example, if you have a studio apartment, then it would be advisable to allocate a dining area or a relaxation area. Laminate for walls looks great in the living room near the TV and in work area. The main thing to remember is that this material is not suitable for the bathroom, since it does not tolerate moisture (it will simply swell). Also, you should not decorate an unheated loggia or balcony with it, since under the influence of temperature changes the laminate will deform and cracks will appear in it.

Pros and cons

Advantages of laminate on the wall in the interior:

  • stronger than MDF and PVC panels, it will not break upon impact;
  • does not absorb moisture due to its dense structure and protection by a polymer layer;
  • easy to clean with regular soapy detergent;
  • wide choice of colors and textures, imitation of natural wood;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • convenient to lay.

Flaws:

  • the cost is higher than that of panels;
  • the material requires a durable surface and reliable fastening due to its heavy weight;
  • suitable for finishing rooms with constant low humidity; the material does not tolerate temperature changes.

To create an accent in the interior, as in the photo, you can sheathe part of the wall and ceiling with boards, and also complement the design with lighting.

Laminate color

Laminate colors can be divided into cold and warm groups, and when repairing you need to stick to one color. It comes in shades of green, blue, white, red, and brown.

You can choose a color to match the tone of the furniture and walls, or you can make a contrasting wall in the interior, both options are appropriate depending on the design. You should also pay attention to the brightness of the laminate, which determines whether colors will merge or contrast in one group of shades. The color can be matched to the doors or the color of the floor.

Light brown
Brown
Dark brown
White
Grey
Black

Multicolored

The combination of laminate on the wall requires harmony with the main interior decoration:

  • When laying a dark laminate on an entire wall, it is better to cover the rest with plain and light wallpaper;
  • Dark plaster in the interior will look good in contrast with white laminate;
  • To create endless space, you can finish the wall and floor with one laminate.

Photo in the living room interior

Laminate finishing is appropriate in rooms of any purpose; in each case, it is important to combine the color of the panels with the main color of the finish.

Laminate flooring on the wall in the living room interior can be mounted both vertically and horizontally, it depends on the size of the room. For example, horizontal panels are only suitable for tall living rooms and will make it visually wider. Vertical installation is suitable for small rooms and will make the ceilings visually higher.

Shown in the photo accent wall made of horizontal panels with mirror inserts, which creates a feeling of depth in the room that continues behind the laminate.

Laminate on the wall in the kitchen

Laminate on the wall in the kitchen interior can be used as an accent contrasting wall and a work surface apron, which will protect against splashes and is easy to clean. The color should be harmoniously combined with the facade kitchen set. To highlight the dining area, you can make a laminate wall in the color of dark wood.

Bedroom decoration

Laminate on the wall in the bedroom interior can be used as inserts above the head of the bed. If the bedroom is large, then you can cover the entire wall with laminate and whiten it, hang colored accessories and framed photographs. A laminate wall at the headboard that matches the color of the bed will create coziness.

The photo shows an example of an interior with wall decoration and floor finishing in the same color. It looks impressive and creates a feeling of infinity.

The photo shows the decoration of the wall at the head of the bed, which matches the overall eco-style of the bedroom interior.

Laminate flooring in the hallway

The wall laminate in the hallway interior should contrast with the color of the floor and it is better to cover only the lower part of the wall with it. It is recommended to mount the laminate on the wall in the corridor vertically, as this will not make it visually smaller.

In the photo, the corner of the hallway is lined with natural wood-colored panels and matches the neutral shades of the interior.

Photo in the bathroom

Laminate on the walls in the bathroom interior can only be used if there is ventilation, which is important for the durability of the structure. Not suitable as an alternative to tiles in the shower area, but you can highlight one wall with wood trim.

Decorating a balcony or loggia

In the interior of the balcony, laminate has become often used for cladding. It protects wall insulation from moisture, and you can also use it to make shelves and line cabinets on the balcony. Great option, if the balcony serves as a study.

Selecting a class and method of fastening

When choosing a laminate, it is worth considering that:

  • the laminate will not be subject to heavy loads;
  • The choice of lock system depends on the method of fastening;
  • an interior with laminate on the wall should provide aesthetic pleasure, which will be helped by an assortment of colors and textures.

Mounting methods

  • Glue. This is a system without locks, installation is carried out only with the help of glue, which is applied to the side and back. The adhesive for laminate flooring on the wall should be silicone, or “liquid nails.” The panels are glued one after another, and any glue that appears should be immediately removed with a wet sponge. Rarely used for lathing.
  • Clicky. To fasten two parts, they are tilted at an angle of 20 degrees to each other and the laminate is inserted into the grooves. The lock snaps easily and securely connects the panels. It can be attached to the sheathing with glue; this option is resistant to mechanical stress.
  • Sheet piling. Fastening is based on the principle of a tongue-and-groove lock, which does not require additional gluing. Mounted on a frame, the panel is secured in the recess using clamps.

Which class should I choose?

To install laminate on a wall, it is not necessary to use the highest durable class (from 33 to 34); low-strength material from class 21 to 31 is sufficient.

In the photo white makes the living room interior brighter, and the wood texture on the wall adds coziness.

Horizontal and vertical installation

Horizontal method

The joints converge into one line, which must be covered with skirting boards, and they are attached to the wall with dowel nails. The plinth is installed no more than 1.5 meters apart. To ensure that the installation is strong and the load is distributed evenly, the laminate should be cut into strips before starting.

Horizontal placement of boards in the interior (as in the photo) will make the room wider, and vertical placement will make the room taller.

Vertical method

Laminate flooring on the wall is attached vertically to a flat surface with glue; there are many installation options; you can combine leftovers from different batches and colors to create a unique interior design.

How to attach laminate flooring to a wall? (video)

There are two common methods of wall mounting: adhesive and lathing.

Glue method

He demands flat surface, to which the laminate will be attached, otherwise gaps will appear and the service life will be shorter. Installing a laminate board on a wall using this method does not require special knowledge and can be done with your own hands. You can glue any type of panels, with or without locks.

When installing with glue, in addition to liquid nails on silicone, you can use special glue, then the panel is pressed. For better strength, the lock can be glued. You may be wondering how to lay laminate flooring on a wall if it takes a lot of plaster to level it. In this case, you should choose the second method.

Metal or wood sheathing

This method does not require creating a flat wall surface using plaster or drywall, since a frame is created. The lathing provides additional insulation and soundproofing for the room. Here the panel is attached with nails or clamps. This method takes longer, but will help save on leveling the walls.

To create a wooden sheathing, you need 2-4 cm slats, which are attached to the wall at a distance of 20-50 cm parallel to the future panels. The metal frame is made from drywall profiles, and some manufacturers also offer a ready-made frame.

The rooms are sorted out. It's time to consider mounting methods. More on this later.

Mounting methods

There are several ways to attach laminate flooring to walls. How to lay it is ultimately up to you, we will only tell you about possible cladding and installation technologies.

Using clamps

Clamps are special metal staples designed to securely fix the laminate. This fastener is perfect for mounting and laying laminate panels on walls.

Clamps can be screwed into wooden or metal sheathing, or into the very base of the wall. They cling tightly to the grooves of the laminate board and fix it tightly.

With lathing

Lathing or frame made of wood, or metal profiles, assembled, observing a step of half the length of the laminate lamella. This will be quite enough for reliable fixation.

Without sheathing

Many people will think whether it is possible and how to fix the laminate on the wall without lathing. The answer is - it is possible and very simple - with the help of glue. If the surface of the walls is not smooth, you first need to level it, and only then start gluing.

How to put it yourself?

All work on laying laminate on walls can be done independently. You don't need to be a super master to do this. You can cover any wall with high quality with your own hands, be it straight or curved.

Very often people ask us - how to nail laminate to the wall? So - there is no need to nail it anywhere, even if you imagine that the heads of the nails will be driven into the grooves of the lamellas, then the next board will not fit tightly.

Remember the main thing: before you start attaching the laminate to the walls yourself, let it rest after purchase, it must be saturated with the atmosphere of the room and accept the ambient temperature.

Do-it-yourself fastening can be divided into two main options - horizontally and vertically.

How to mount vertically?

You can easily guess how the laminate is attached to the wall vertically. And there are no special difficulties here. The horizontal sheathing is simply assembled and installation is carried out on it using glue or clamps.

How to mount horizontally?

How to lay laminate horizontally on the surface of the walls also seems easy to guess, but there is a nuance here. The laminate itself is heavy, because of this, the masonry from below must be strengthened with a block so that the entire structure does not slide down.

Or, you can use clamps, then no one should roll away anywhere. We advise everyone to choose this option.

How to glue?

Laminate flooring can be glued to walls horizontally or vertically. You can sculpt lamellas directly onto a concrete wall without any hassle if it is very smooth.

If the wall is uneven, you must first level it with putty, plaster, etc. Or you can assemble a frame and glue the laminate onto it.

Gluing with adhesive, and what it will stick to - we’ll figure it out further.

What glue should I use?

Pasting walls with laminate requires a powerful adhesive composition, because... The weight of the lamellas is not small.

Do not skimp on glue - this stinginess can lead to disastrous consequences in the future. Laminate flooring may fall off after some time.

Take high-quality options for liquid nails from well-known manufacturers.

Liquid nails are clear. It's time to discuss acceptable clearances.

How much to retreat from the walls when laying?

When laying laminate on walls, you should leave a distance of up to 20 mm from the floor, walls and ceiling, because Laminate flooring can expand over time.

The gap can be increased if you plan to cover the ends with special corners.

The distance between the wall and the laminate is not important. If you attach the panels directly to the wall, then no gaps are needed, if on the sheathing, then it all depends on the cross-section of the bars.

Many people choose thicker bars in order to have more space behind the laminate wall in the future, to hide wiring and various communications.

We sorted out the indentations and gaps. It's time to think about how and with what you can refine the uneven edges after installation.

How to cover the edges (ends)?

After laying the laminate on the wall, the question arises - how to decorate the edges or ends? Plastic corners of various colors and shades are sold to help you.

Additionally, profiles in the shape of the letter P are available for sale. They come in metal and plastic.

You can use a rubber plug, which is often used to seal cracks during installation. suspended ceilings. The main thing is that the color scheme matches.

All of the above options are attached with liquid nails or regular silicone sealant.

How to trim near walls without taking it apart?

If it happens that the laminate, laid tightly to the adjacent walls, begins to stand on end, this is a sign that it is time to trim it.

It is best, of course, to disassemble the entire structure, but if there is no such opportunity or desire, you can trim without disassembling it.

To do this, you can use manual circular saw, setting the step to the thickness of the laminate with a gap.

There is another option - an ordinary grinder, but here you need to be very careful, because... This tool is very dangerous. Special saw blades for laminate flooring are available for sale.

You can also use a laminate file, varieties of which can be found in hardware stores.

The easiest way to trim is with a sharp chisel, marking the cutting line with a construction knife. The cut will not be completely straight, but this can be easily corrected by closing the ends after finishing the work. We discussed above how this can be done.

Color combination

It's time to think about how to combine laminate flooring different colors on the wall so that it matches furniture, doors, wallpaper, etc. There are options for combinations by stripes, i.e. one stripe of one color, the second of another.
