Differential "EATON" (interwheel) with electric blocking UAZ for standard axle shafts / CV joints

Applicability and installation

Installed on UAZ 31519 Hunter, UAZ 3163 Patriot, UAZ 2363 Pickup, UAZ Cargo, UAZ Profi, UAZ 452, 2206 and their modifications with Spicer bridges, can be installed on UAZ 469, 452 (Bukhanka) , with Timken / Hybrid bridges

Eaton Electrical Lockout Warranty 6 months from date of installation. We strongly recommend that you install in a certified car service, in order to avoid incorrect connection of the lock

Attention! Turn on when the car is stationary or at speeds up to three miles per hour with minimal slip. Turning on at a higher speed can damage the locking mechanism, and the subsequent refusal of warranty repairs. We deny warranty if the locking clutch or pins are damaged. After passing a difficult section, the blocking must be turned off. It is not recommended to disable the blocking under load, for example in a corner. When the lock is loaded, it may not turn off immediately, as a result - the differential will be locked when it is not needed.
In cold weather, the viscosity of the oil increases, which leads to the spontaneous activation of the blocking. We recommend using synthetic oil during the cold season.

A distinctive feature of differentials with electric locking is ease of installation, ease of connection and simplicity of the assembly of the unit itself. Air-lock differentials and hydraulic-lock differentials require complex installation. They include many components, which significantly reduces the reliability of the unit, and poor-quality installation leads to damage to the wiring and failure of the entire system as a whole. When installing differentials with electric locking, there are no unnecessary installation diagrams where you can make a mistake: you do not need compressors, cylinders to turn on pneumatic and hydraulic drives. Electrical interlocking, when the control button is pressed, is carried out by an electromagnet and electrical circuit activates the locking mechanism.

The EATON differential locking solenoid mechanism is activated, completely locking the axle, with a simple push of a button.
When the axle is fully locked, all available torque is distributed to both wheels. Due to the wheel, which has the greatest adhesion to the road, the car is able to continue driving.

The differential with full, 100% lock-up has been tested on millions of off-road vehicles around the world.
Developed in accordance with Russian climatic and road operating conditions, the EATON differential:

  • allows you to completely block the axle shafts at the request of the driver
  • can be controlled by hand switch or electronic control unit
  • four-satellite design for maximum durability
  • maintenance-free, no special lubricants or additives required
  • compatible for use on front or rear axles
  • in off mode functions as an open differential

Switching the electrical interlock on and off.

To activate the lock, press and hold the button until the rear axle differential lock indicator in the instrument cluster turns on. On the UAZ Patriot and UAZ Pickup (with the "Dymos" transfer case), first put the RK in 4L mode, on the UAZ Cargo (with the RK UAZ) - in the 4x4 mode. After activating the lock, the ABS is automatically turned off, as a result of which the ABS malfunction indicator lights up, the LCD display of the instrument cluster displays text messages: "Electronic cross-axle differential lock disabled", "Hill start assist disabled", "Anti-lock braking system disabled". Manual disengagement of the lock is possible at any time by pressing and holding the button again until the rear axle differential lock indicator goes off.

Installation requires a lockout clutch retainer bracket and wiring with a button and relay.

When installing wheels 33 "and higher, in order to exclude possible damage to the CV joints / axle shafts, it is recommended to install reinforced Val racing axle shafts or reinforced CV joints Hammer and sickle

Magnetic coercion! The new Eaton ELocker rear axle lock is on sale. Made in America. The kit includes wires, a button, a relay and a corrugation. The price is 37 thousand rubles. " We found such an advertisement on one of the "jeep" Internet sites.

Indeed, the American company Eaton offers an ELocker differential with an electromagnetic lock to everyone (on the company's official website there is detailed instructions on installation), and American tuning firms sell it for 800-1000 dollars.

However, for buyers of Gazelles and Sables Business, the same differential will cost much less: 12 thousand rubles with the installation! Moreover, ELocker will be installed serially on all-wheel drive versions (but only on the rear axle), and on rear-wheel drive cars, including the promising Gazelle Next, as an option.

Moreover, gas workers assure that for the same 12 thousand rubles any “gazelist” will be able to replace his usual differential with a new one with a blocking at branded service stations. First, a little theory.

The task of the cross-wheel differential is to distribute the torque between the wheels and at the same time allow them to rotate at different speeds. This is necessary, for example, when turning, when "the outer wheel is turning faster than the" inner "one. If there were no differential, tires and transmission parts would quickly come to an end! The most common and inexpensive to manufacture symmetrical bevel differentials consist of six (or four) gears in a housing to which the driven gear of the final drive reducer is attached.

This design, where the torque is distributed equally to both wheels, is ideal, but only for good roads. Problems begin on slippery and muddy terrain, when the traction coefficient of the left and right tires differs markedly. This is where troubles begin: the wheel that is located? say, on the ice, it starts spinning madly, and the other wheel, on the asphalt, stands rooted to the spot. That's it, the car stalled! It doesn't matter if it's a truck or a car.

And the forced blocking rigidly "connects" the left and right axle shafts. And if the surface is not very slippery under the wheel, which did not rotate before blocking, the car will start and drive. Well, if there is ice or impassable mud under both wheels, blocking will not help here, you need to put on chains ...

There are a great many designs of locking differentials - both with forced locking, and "self-blocks", as on the old GAZ-66 or the current Sadko. But, according to Gazans, its own limited-slip differential is difficult to manufacture and capricious in operation. Therefore, the choice fell on the "purchased" American design, since it ideally fits into the rear axle housing of Gazelles and Sobols in place of the "native" differential.

Eaton itself has already sold more than 450 thousand of these devices: of course, they are less common than the self-locking MLocker (sold more than nine million copies!) .. html) Brazilian production: this model has no all-wheel drive, but the Brazilians need cross-country ability.

It was not possible to find out why Eaton cut the price for the “Russian” version so much, but we do not exclude that this is due to plans to conquer the market (the company has other projects with GAZ). But, according to Gazans, Eaton had no competitors. It took GAZ 18 months to adapt and test this system: among other things, the operation of the American differential was tested in real operation on ambulance Gazelles (the blocking turned out to be useful on slippery entrances to courtyards).

Disgruntled gazelists have already appeared on Internet forums who decided that the plant is introducing electronic blocking ... Nothing of the kind: the control mechanism here is electromagnetic, and the principle of operation in a nutshell is as follows. When current is applied to the electromagnet, a magnetic field is created, which activates the mechanical blocking mechanism, and when the supply of current is interrupted, the differential is unlocked. For those who are interested in details, we offer a detailed description.

By pressing the button, the driver applies current to an electromagnet (N13 in the diagram), rigidly attached to the inner wall of the rear axle housing (in the serial Gazelle differential there are no fixed parts associated with the crankcase). The magnetic field attracts the grooved ring (# 12) to the stationary electromagnet, which rotates with the differential housing. The ring “slows down” and, with the help of its profiled grooves, shifts the pushers (no. 11) together with the lock engagement clutch (no. 17), which is connected with the differential case (no. 10) with its outer teeth. Having moved, the clutch engages with the half-axle gear (No. 4) with its internal cutouts. The lock has turned on!

Accordingly, the remaining gears also cannot rotate relative to each other and become "one piece" with the differential housing. And since the left and right axle shafts are splines into the differential axle gears (N24 and No.9), they become rigidly connected to each other.

The blocking is disengaged simply: the driver presses the button again - and the current supply to the electromagnet is interrupted. The ring is no longer attracted to the coil and the return spring (# 2) moves all actuator parts to their original position.

Now let's see how it all looks and works in real life. External differences can be seen only by looking under the car: in variants with interlocking, two braided wiring are suitable for the bridge housing. True, both the wires and the "chip" fixed on the crankcase look flimsy: what will happen to them in a couple of winters? In the cockpit, above the radio, there is a spring-loaded button for turning on the system. Pressed - the yellow icon on the instrument panel lit up, pressed again - the icon went out. It's a pity that the button is not informative: if you poke into it without looking at the indication, it can easily turn out that the lock has not turned on!

The rear-wheel drive cars that GAZ brought to the test site were equipped with a Cummins 2.8 diesel, and we once again liked the way it behaves: quiet, without any special vibrations, high-torque from low revs. And the cross-country ability of the Gazelle itself is excellent.

So, the Gazelle crawled perfectly on the dirty snow-covered dirt road without any blockages, and even on the wet basalt tile of the auto-polygon, designed to imitate ice, started up the hill almost without slipping.

But we still managed to simulate a couple of situations: at first we stalled, stopping on an icy rise - and set off, engaging the lock. And then the blocking turned out to be necessary on an artificial obstacle - a slide with a roller track. By the way, in the instructions of the Eaton company it is indicated that ELocker can be turned on at a speed not exceeding 5 km / h, and at 30 km / h it will automatically turn off so as not to "break" the differential.

Check it out? We accelerate not to five, but to 25 km / h, press the button ... The gazelle jerked a little on the move, but the lock turned on properly. But we do not recommend doing this! And when the indicated 30 km / h is reached, the icon on the instrument panel really goes out - and then, no matter how you press the button, the ELocker will not turn on.

According to Gazovites, the 5 km / h limit is not related to the durability of the differential (on the test bench, all parts of the bridge withstand an input torque of 250 kgm - this is a double margin of safety), but with safety. If you turn on the lock while driving, the car can turn around on a slippery road.

Sales of cars with a new differential will begin in December, and it is promised that in January 2013 they will appear at all dealerships. Over the next year, Eaton, together with GAZ, hopes to implement about 30 thousand of such devices (both on new cars and for "retrofitting" previously released ones). However, according to Gazans, ELocker will not be sold for self-installation.

The factory warranty for a differential with a lock is 100 thousand km, or two years, and the resource must be comparable to the resource of the bridge itself.

Of course, blocking is not a panacea for off-road problems: where an experienced driver can drive without blocking, another will get stuck on all-wheel drive! But for problematic roads (and we have the overwhelming majority of them), blocking is a very useful thing. And if we had to buy a brand new Gazelle or Sable, we would not hesitate to pay extra twice for 12 thousand: for blocking and the same amount for another option - ABS.

GAZ plant plans to install ELocker ™ (ILOKER) on new GAZelles:

  • 4x2 - as an additional option, incl. for GAZelle NEXT, the cost of such an option will be 12,000 rubles.
  • 4x4 - ELocker ™ (ILOKER) bollard will be included in the basic package and will be installed on the rear axle only.
  • The possibility of installing ELocker ™ (ILOKER) on previously produced vehicles is being considered. Information on price, installation technology and packaging will be provided later.

The choice of Eaton GAS as a supplier is logical. Eaton was founded in 1911 by J.O. Eaton and is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Manufacturing facilities are based in innovation centers in the USA, China and India. Eaton's products are shipped to more than 150 countries, accounting for 55% of sales, with the remainder going to the US market. In 2011, Eaton had sales of $ 16.0 billion. Eaton has 74,000 employees worldwide (prior to the recent acquisition of Cooper).

Eaton has been making differentials since 1963 and is the largest differentials supplier in North America and Korea. Eaton differentials are precision-forged and have a reputation for being the most reliable in the industry.

The eaton ELocker ™ (ILOKER) locking differential installed on the GAZelle functions as follows:

This is how ELocker ™ (ILOKER) assembly diagram looks like

Consider the principle of operationlockable rear axle differentialELocker ™ (ILOKER). In a simplified form, its work can be described as follows:

  • Blocking is carried out using an electric drive.
  • When the electromagnet is activated, the pushers slide along the grooves in the profiled washer, pushing the locking ring into engagement with the internal splines on the side gear.
  • This locks the axle and directs the torque to the drive wheels with a 50/50 distribution.

On the UAZ Patriot 2017 model year, the Plant has provided the possibility of installing an Eaton rear inter-wheel lock. This is an ELocker electrically locked differential. Exactly the same differentials are already being installed on GAZel and Sobol (since 2012).

Differential with electric lock EATON is turned on forcibly by the button located under the washer "on transfer case.

It is recommended to turn on the blocking when the vehicle speed does not exceed 5 km / h. If one of the driving wheels is slipping, the differential allows the axle to be locked by 100%. Differential disengagement is possible manual or automatic.
Automatically, the EATON electric inter-axle differential is deactivated at a speed of 30 km / h, this function is programmed in the engine control unit.

Cross-axle differential device with electric locking EATON

By pressing button differential lock, the driver applies current to electromagnet, which is rigidly fixed with a bracket in the rear axle housing. Magnetic field attracts to a stationary electromagnet ring with profiled grooves (swivel plate) that rotates with the differential housing.
The ring is "braked" and, with the help of its profiled grooves, it shifts pushers together with clutch engaging the lock, which with its outer teeth is connected to the differential housing. Having moved, the sleeve engages with the inner cutouts axle gear... The lock has turned on!

When the voltage is removed from the electromagnet, the pivot plate is released, the pushers stop acting on the clutch, and the return spring disengages the clutch from the semi-axle gear.

In the engaged state, an inter-wheel differential with an electric lock EATON is designed to transmit the same torque to the right and left drive wheels. This makes it possible to significantly increase the cross-country ability of UAZ vehicles. Helps to overcome steeper climbs and descents, deeper, snow, mud, swampy areas and sand.

When disengaged, the EATON electrical interwheel differential functions as an open differential and distributes torque between the right and left drive wheels, allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds.

Differential with electric lock EATON is included forcibly by a button located in a convenient place on the dashboard. It is recommended to turn on the blocking when the vehicle speed does not exceed 5 km / h. If one of the driving wheels is slipping, the differential allows the axle to be locked by 100%. Differential disengagement is possible manual or automatic.

The EATON electrical inter-wheel differential is automatically disengaged at a speed of 30 km / h. In this case, automatic shutdown is possible only if there is an electronic one in the UAZ. Manual forced disengagement of the EATON lock is performed with a button or switch on the dashboard.

Remove Timken from the car in accordance with the UAZ Operation and Repair Manual, take out the axle shafts or CV joints. Remove the standard differential and unscrew the driven gear. Remove bearings from differential and replace if necessary (ref. 7510). Install the bearings on the EATON electrical locking differential. Install the driven gear.

Adjust the bearing on the electrofusion side with the plates. The gap between the driven and driving gears should be within 1-3 mm between the teeth. Remove the differential, unscrew the driven gear, install it in the axle housing to determine the place of welding of the electrofusion fixing bracket. Weld the electrofusion fixing bracket in place.

Take out the differential, scald the electrofusion fixing bracket in place. Drill a 13 mm hole for the electrical lead on the top of the axle housing. Remove the differential, put on the driven gear. When assembling a differential with a driven gear, it is necessary to degrease the threaded part of the screws before tightening and lubricate it with an anaerobic medium fixing thread sealant in order to prevent self-loosening.

Install differential assembly into crankcase. Adjust the axle housing cover bearing using the expansion ring and shims. Assemble Timken Bridge and install on the vehicle. Route and connect the electrical wires to the switch or button.

Place the vehicle on a lift and check that the electrical interlock is activated and deactivated. For Timken axles with EATON electrical interlocking, it is recommended to use oil of SAE 75W90 or 80W90 viscosity grade, API group - GL-5, GL-4/5. With continuous operation of UAZ in difficult road conditions, it is necessary to use transmission oil with viscosity according to SAE 75W140 in driving axles.
