All chronic stomach diseases disrupt the functioning of the stomach gastrointestinal tract. Medicines with enzymes will help eliminate this problem and restore intestinal function. The drug Festal refers to enzyme agents. Instructions for use of Festal contain complete information on the composition and dosage of the product.

The medicine is produced in the form of a white dragee, with a shiny protective film and a slightly vanilla odor. The main components of the product are:

The excipient in the tablets is saline solution. The drug shell contains:

  • cellulose;
  • ethyl vanillin;
  • castor oil;
  • methylparaben;
  • sucrose;
  • titanium dioxide;
  • glycerol;
  • macrogoal

The product is produced in aluminum foil strips of 10 tablets each. Before purchasing a medicine, pay attention to the expiration date of the drug. Also, look for instructions for use in the middle of the package and check the integrity of the strips where the tablets are packaged.

If possible, ask the pharmacist for a certificate authorizing the sale of the medicine in Russia. The medicine Festal is manufactured in India and undergoes more than one customs inspection and control. Only the original drug, which contains all the components necessary for treatment, will help improve digestion and normalize the functioning of the pancreas.

Helps normalize the functioning of the pancreas, which produces a special secretion for normal digestion of food. It also compensates for the insufficiency of the biliary function of the liver. The substances that make up the medicine speed up the process of digesting carbohydrates and proteins, and also help them to be completely absorbed in the small intestine.

The enzyme hemicellulase, which is found in tablets, accelerates the process of digestion of plant fiber and thus increases digestive functions and reduces the formation of gases in the intestines.

Also, a unique enzyme in the medicine Festal is bovine bile extract. It has choleretic properties, increases the emulsification of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and increases the active processes of lipase. It is this substance that is included in the tablets that distinguishes Festal from all its analogues.

Indications

What does Festal help with? The medicine is indicated:

  1. For the treatment of insufficient production of pancreatic secretion.
  2. Prescribed for diseases such as chronic pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis.
  3. Tablets are also prescribed for chronic and dystrophic diseases of the stomach, liver, gall bladder and intestines.
  4. Drops are considered quite effective when used in combination with other drugs after resection or irradiation of the stomach, gallbladder, intestines, which are accompanied by digestive pathologies, diarrhea, and bloating.
  5. In addition, the medicine can be used after a heavy feast, where symptoms of overeating are present. Then within an hour you will feel an improvement in your condition, the food will begin to be digested quickly and you will be able to continue the banquet in a great mood.
  6. Thanks to its complex composition, Festal also helps eliminate problems with poisoning.
  7. The medicine will be able to restore the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
Contraindications

There are several diseases for which taking Festal is contraindicated. List of them:

Instructions for use

The tablet must be taken with meals or at the end of a meal. Take the product with a small amount of water without chewing. For the adult population, tablets are prescribed in a dosage of 1 or 2 tablets three times a day. If necessary, the dose can be increased, but only on the recommendation of a doctor. IN childhood the medicine is prescribed only on an individual basis and as needed.

The course of treatment with tablets lasts from several days to several months. Everything depends on the course of the treatment process and its positive therapeutic effect. There are patients who are prescribed the drug for life as replacement therapy. Often the medicine is used in preparation for an x-ray of the stomach or intestines, as well as before an ultrasound examination.

The dose of the medicine is 2 tablets 3 times a day. The course takes two or three days. After such careful preparation for the procedure, the doctor will be able to take a good look internal organs in the absence of bloating. If within a few days the medicine does not bring the desired therapeutic effect, then you need to consult a doctor who will conduct a thorough examination and prescribe an additional group of medications.

Photo: Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug Festal is prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding only in special cases when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

Interaction with other tools

When Festal is taken together with the drug PASK, sulfonamides, and antibiotics, their absorption increases. The absorption of iron-based products may also be impaired.

The effectiveness of Festal is reduced by simultaneous use with antacids that contain calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide.

Drug overdose

Science does not know cases of drug overdose. Only in exceptional cases, when the medicine falls into the hands of a child and a high dose of the medicine has been drunk, in this case poisoning may occur. Here it is necessary to provide the victim with first aid.

First of all, you need to rinse the stomach and give several cleansing enemas. Then give the adsorbent to drink. In more severe cases of poisoning, the child must be hospitalized in the department and continue treatment there under the supervision of specialists.

In a hospital setting, infusion therapy and other groups of medications are used to help cope with the symptoms of poisoning. Therefore, you need to remember that all medical supplies should be stored away from children in a specially closed first aid kit or box.

Festal tablets, when taken, may cause some side effects:

  • From the digestive system: epigastric pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, decreased synthesis of bile acids.
  • Increased levels of uric acid in blood plasma.
  • Hyperuricosuria.
  • The occurrence of an allergic reaction.

Allergies are a very serious condition that requires immediate help. Otherwise, the reaction can lead to serious complications and even fatal outcome. If allergy symptoms occur, you must take an antiallergic drug. For more extensive forms of allergies, the antiallergic drug is administered intravenously under the supervision of a specialist.

Rash and itching on the skin are not all manifestations of a reaction to the drug. In rare cases, angioedema or anaphylactic shock may occur. The patient is immediately transported to the hospital and emergency care is provided there for this condition. After all measures have been taken to eliminate the allergic reaction, the patient remains under the supervision of medical personnel for several more days.

Many allergies are fraught with recurrence, which can cost a person his life. Before starting treatment, you should always carefully study the instructions for use of the medicine, where all contraindications and side effects are clearly indicated. Sometimes allergies can be cumulative and appear after just a few days of treatment.

The patient must remember that he had an allergic reaction to taking Festal and report this to the local therapist, who will record this data in the patient’s individual outpatient card. Only through the joint efforts of the patient and the doctor can a serious complication that causes an allergic reaction be avoided.

If the patient has a history of cystic fibrosis, the dosage should correspond to the quantity and quality of food that he took. The medicine is sold in pharmacies without a prescription. The tablets should be stored in a dark and dry place, at a temperature of no more than 25 degrees.

Use in childhood

For children, the drug is prescribed only on an individual basis and only strictly as prescribed by a doctor.

There are several analogues of the drug that have identical composition and purpose. One of the popular substitutes is Mezim. The doctor will tell you in detail which is better Festal or Mezim, taking into account the individual characteristics and diagnosis of the patient. Both drugs are pancreatic.

They also have the same composition and they both participate in the digestion of food. Festal and Mezim contain three main components that help in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The difference between Festal and Mezim is that it also contains bile, which can cause allergies in the patient. There is no such substance in Mezim.

Medicines also differ in the form of release. Festal is produced in the form of dragees white, protected by a special shell. It does not dissolve until it reaches the small intestine, that is, the active ingredients of the medicine are not destroyed by exposure to an acidic environment.

Mezim is available in pink tablets, without a special coating, so it can begin its therapeutic effect directly in the intestines, which may not subsequently alleviate the patient’s condition.

There is also a difference between Mezim and Festal in price. Mezim is more expensive than Festal. This is due to the constant advertising of the drug on TV, and not its medicinal data.

  • Festal in dragees - 137 rubles;
  • - 210 rubles;
  • Pancreatin – 50 rubles;
  • Microzim – 140 rubles;
  • Gastenorm forte – 60 rubles.

All these analogues have the same active ingredients and indications for use as Festal. They eliminate discomfort in the stomach in a short period of time and promote rapid digestion of food. You cannot switch from one medicine to another on your own without consulting a specialist. All this can lead to serious complications.

Digestive problems happen to almost all of us. As soon as there is a holiday, again a night of overeating and combining incompatible foods..site) believes that getting acquainted with the drug festal and instructions for use would not be superfluous. Festal is an enzyme agent.

Why does our body need festal from time to time?

Digestive enzymes are produced by the pancreas and other digestive organs. Normally, they should be enough to digest everything we eat. But this is normal. We don't always eat what we can eat. An abundance of fatty, heavy, carbohydrate foods makes the pancreas work hard. It may not cope, especially if you have already had problems with this organ or if you load your gastrointestinal tract in this way more than once a year, but periodically. In order to help the pancreas, enzymes can be introduced from outside. It is these enzymes that are found in the preparation Festal.

So, festal contains pancreatin, bile And hemicellulase.
Enzymes found in pancreatin ( lipase, amylase and protease) will help you digest food components such as fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The presence of ox bile in festal improves the processing of all food components, and hemicellulase will help your stomach cope with difficult-to-digest plant fiber. In addition, taking festal activates the production of enzymes by the body itself.

When should I take it?

If your pancreas or other digestive organs cannot cope with their tasks due to inflammation or other diseases, after surgery or radiotherapy, then Festal can help you. Festal is also prescribed for age-related dystrophic changes in the digestive organs. If you have overeaten or are eating incorrectly, then Festal can also help you. If you are temporarily unable to chew food normally or if you are preparing for an ultrasound examination or x-ray of the digestive organs, then you should also take Festal.

How to take Festal?

Festal is taken one tablet at a time with food. The dragee does not need to be crushed or chewed. In severe cases, it is necessary to take two tablets. You can take Festal for almost any period of time. If the body does not produce enzymes at all, then Festal can be taken even for many years in a row.

Can Festal cause side effects?

If you take Festal in too large doses, you may experience diarrhea, vomiting, or discomfort in the epigastric area. Sometimes festal can cause skin rashes, inflammation of the nasal mucosa, and the flow of tears.

Who should not take Festal?

Festal should not be used in acute inflammation of the pancreas, as well as in case of exacerbation of chronic inflammation of the pancreas. Festal is not allowed to be used for complex liver diseases, accompanied by an increase in the amount of bilirubin in the blood, for non-infectious hepatitis, for stagnation in the intestines, for empyema of the gallbladder, as well as in case of individual intolerance to the components.

Warning

Avoid overdoses of Festal. In such cases, the amount of uric acid in your urine and blood plasma may increase. If you accidentally took too much Festal tablets, stop using this drug. Take medications that reduce discomfort.

Festal affects the body's absorption of antibiotics and sulfonamides.
Festal, like dietary supplements, is allowed to be sold in pharmacies without a prescription. Do not keep festal in warm and damp places. From the date of release, Festal can be consumed for three years.

To do this, you need to compare the symptoms of the disease and the indications for which these drugs are prescribed. Of course, for this it is better to consult a doctor.

As for the effectiveness of these two drugs, according to experts, Creon is higher, and it has more advantages. Creon is offered in a more convenient form of release - capsules, and has an improved principle of action - granules dissolve well in the small intestine.

In addition, Creon has more indications for use and fewer contraindications. This remedy can also be taken by children from 1 year of age.

Pharmacological action

The drug compensates for the insufficiency of the exocrine function of the pancreas due to pancreatin and the biliary function of the liver due to the bile component. Festal has proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic effects. The enzymes included in pancreatin (amylase, lipase and protease) facilitate the digestion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which contributes to their more complete absorption in the small intestine.

The presence of bile acids in the composition of the drug Festal provides additional opportunities for the correction of biliary insufficiency, which often accompanies chronic pancreatitis. Bile extract has a choleretic effect, facilitates the absorption of fats and fat-soluble A, E and K, and promotes the secretion of lipase by the pancreas.

The enzyme hemicellulase promotes the breakdown of plant fiber, which also improves digestive processes and reduces the formation of gases in the intestines.

Indications

Insufficiency of the exocrine function of the pancreas in chronic pancreatitis in combination with biliary insufficiency due to various pathological conditions, clinically manifested by impaired digestion of food, flatulence, and a tendency to constipation.

As part of combination therapy for:

  • diffuse liver diseases - alcoholic and toxic liver damage, liver cirrhosis;
  • large losses of bile acids (in patients after cholecystectomy);
  • impaired circulation of bile acids, observed with biliary dyskinesia, dysbacteriosis, malabsorption;
  • violation of neurohumoral regulation of the processes of bile formation and bile secretion in chronic gastrointestinal diseases - chronic gastritis, chronic duodenitis, chronic cholecystitis.

To improve the digestion of food in patients with normal gastrointestinal function in case of errors in nutrition, as well as in cases of chewing dysfunction, forced long-term immobilization, sedentary life.

Preparation for X-ray and ultrasound of the abdominal organs.

Contraindications

  • hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
  • acute pancreatitis;
  • exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis;
  • liver failure;
  • hepatic coma or precoma;
  • hepatitis;
  • hyperbilirubinemia;
  • obstructive jaundice;
  • cholelithiasis;
  • empyema of the gallbladder;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • tendency to diarrhea;
  • pregnancy;
  • breastfeeding period;
  • children under 3 years of age.

With caution: cystic fibrosis, gout, hyperuricemia, renal failure.

Dosage

The drug should be taken orally, without chewing, during or immediately after meals, with a small amount of liquid.

For adults Prescribe 1-2 tablets 3 times a day. Higher doses are prescribed by the doctor.

Use of the drug in children as prescribed by a doctor.

The duration of treatment can vary from several days (if the digestive process is disrupted due to errors in the diet) to several months or years (if constant replacement therapy is necessary).

Before X-ray or ultrasound examination- 2 tablets 2-3 times/day for 2-3 days before the study.

Side effects

According to WHO, adverse reactions are distributed according to systemic organ classes, indicating the frequency of their occurrence as follows: very often (≥1/10), often (≥1/100,<1/10), нечасто (≥1/1000, <1/100), редко (≥1/10 000, <1/1000) и очень редко (<1/10 000), частота неизвестна (частоту возникновения явлений нельзя определить на основании имеющихся данных).

From the immune system: frequency unknown - anaphylactic reactions, including urticaria and angioedema.

From the kidneys and urinary tract: frequency is unknown - there are reports of cases of hyperuricosuria with prolonged use of pancreatin in high doses.

From the gastrointestinal tract: frequency unknown - abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, irritation of the oral mucosa (see section "Special Instructions"), anal itching. In patients with cystic fibrosis, while taking large doses of pancreatin (significantly exceeding those recommended for the drug Festal), in some cases, the development of constipation, colon stenosis, intestinal obstruction, and fibrosing colonopathy was observed.

Metabolism and nutrition: frequency unknown - hyperuricemia (while taking ultra-high doses of pancreatin).

Overdose

Symptoms: hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria.

Treatment: drug withdrawal and symptomatic therapy.

Drug interactions

When used simultaneously with the drug Festal, the absorption of sulfonamides and antibiotics is enhanced. Possible reduction in absorption of iron supplements.

Long-term use of pancreatin may reduce the absorption of iron supplements.

Concomitant use of antacids containing calcium carbonate and/or magnesium hydroxide may lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of pancreatin.

Cimetidine may enhance the effect of pancreatin.

Pancreatin may reduce the effect of acarbose, so you should not use Festal and acarbose at the same time.

Pancreatin may reduce absorption.

Special instructions

The use of the drug Festal is contraindicated during attacks of acute pancreatitis, as well as during exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis. The use of the drug is possible after consultation with a doctor during the recovery period and during diet correction.

Cases of narrowing of the colon (fibrosing colonopathy), intestinal obstruction and constipation have been reported in children with cystic fibrosis taking pancreatin in high doses (much higher than those recommended for Festal) or for a long period of time. Therefore, if complaints persist or worsen, or if any additional symptoms occur, the patient is advised to consult with their doctor.

The tablet should not be chewed or crushed, as this may lead to premature release of enzymes, which may cause irritation of the oral mucosa and/or lead to decreased enzyme activity.

Festal contains purines, so it should be used with caution in patients with gout, hyperuricemia, and renal failure.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery

There is no effect of the drug Festal on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.

Pregnancy and lactation

The safety of using pancreatin during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Festal is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation.

The drug is available without a prescription.

Storage conditions and periods

The drug should be stored out of the reach of children at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Shelf life - 3 years. Do not use after the expiration date stated on the package.
